    90 buick centry

    does anybody know what would cause the 3rd brake light stay on but the regular brake lights work fine

    Sounds like a faulty brake switch. located at the base of the brake pedal. There are two switchs. I think one is a vacuum release, and the other is electronic. The electronic one is a dual throw switch so there are two switches triggered by one arm. The arm has most likely broken while the pedal was pressed so the switch for the high mount is stuck on, but the switch for the brake lights is still functioning like it should. It may also only need slight adjustment to ensure the button on the end of the switch is fully engaging and disengaging.
