9 Speed transmission 2nd-3rd gear barely any difference.

I was manually shifting my 9 Speed and noticed there is barely any difference between 2nd and 3rd gears it's almost like a virtual shift from a CVT. I drove a Lacrosse with the 9 Speed same thing. Did anybody noticed that?

The 8 speed isn't much different in that regard. Plenty of situations where the 8-speed Aisin transmission skips from 1st to 3rd because there isn't that much of a hill of beans worth of difference between the two ratios.

It looks like quite a jump from 1st to 3rd if 2nd is skipped. 😲
I need to take her more for the ride to get a feel for her. (Not trying to sound like a pervert...)


On the other hand, the 9 speed does look very close to each other.
(Is it even realistic to have a direct drive ration all the way up at 7th gear...?)

what's always in my head with the automatic transmissions above 6 gears is "how many overdrives are there? How many does one engine need?"

This is my first automatic vehicle with more than 1 overdrive gear and a direct drive. So there is still the learning curve on how to deal with her.
The other vehicle I had that has more than 1 overdrive gear did not have a direct drive, but that was a stick shift where I get to choose which gear. I still miss that car though.

Car and Driver magazine's road test of a FWD Sportback noted that 3rd had very little difference from 2nd. They stated that the transmission is programmed to skip 3rd when accelerating briskly.

I don't know which (if any) GM transmissions fall under this umbrella but there are a few multi speed automatics currently in production which rarely utilize 1st gear - it's too "steep" to use unless you are flooring it from a dead stop.

My E350 Mercedes 7 Speed was like that. Always started off in 2nd unless i manually started in 1st. (Or tromped on it).

Alex Dykes (Alex on Autos) will usually call out when a change in transmission for a vehicle/engine combo is simply about the published 0-60 times more than anything that benefits the consumer on a daily basis. He's called out some cars where a manual trans has been replaced by a DCT as being simply for the sake of published 0-60 times.

Yes they did mention it. I just wonder what would be the benefits of having such a close ratio.
