I found this online. Anybody have any thoughts on whether this sounds correct?

Programming with a Recognized Transmitter
A new RKE transmitter can be programmed to the vehicle when there are two recognized RKE transmitters. To program, the vehicle must be off and all of the RKE transmitters, both currently recognized and new, must be with you.

1. Place the recognized RKE transmitters into the storage bin with the lock icon.

2. Remove the key lock cylinder cap.

3. Insert the vehicle key of the new RKE transmitter into the key lock cylinder located on the outside of the driver door and turn the key counterclockwise to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. The DIC displays READY FOR REMOTE #3, 4 or 5.

4. Place the new RKE transmitter into the storage bin with the buttons facing up.

5. Press ENGINE START/STOP.When the RKE transmitter is learned, the DIC will show that it is ready to program the next transmitter.

6. Remove the RKE transmitter from the storage bin and press UNLOCK. To program additional RKE transmitters, repeat Steps 3–5.When all additional RKE transmitters are programmed, press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

7. Put the key back into the transmitter.

Hmmm. I couldn't resist. Didn't do the trick. Turning the key counterclockwise 5x DID seem to put it in to programming mode. But then nada.
Thoughts?

No help but following. Did you end up getting a non oem fob off ebay or the like?
No, it's an OEM fob, but yes off of eBay. I'll make a can tomorrow, see if I can get some info.

I got two transmitters from gmpartsdirect and programmed them as described above. Worked fine. They don't have a door key so there's no way to attach them to your key ring :-(

Really?! Huh, I could not get it to work, and when I called the vendor was told that I needed a special something or other that locksmiths have to complete the task. Did you use anything beyond the description above?

no locksmith required. You have to take the physical key out of the key fob, and the small triangular-shaped placed cover off the lock on the driver's side door. I read the instructions several times to memorize them because there is a 10-second timeout or you get to start over from the beginning.
As far as I can tell the vehicle keys are cut identically, so no way for the car to notice you used "the other one" to open the door. You would need a locksmith if you lost the metal key.

I had to memorize the instructions because there is a short timeout from when you turn the key in the door lock until the next steps.
If it matters, this is the spare key remote I bought, from RockAuto.com (not gmparts that I mentioned before).

There is a secondary programming method "Programming without a Recognized Transmitter". If you go that route it forgets ALL your transmitters and you get to program them all.

If there are no currently recognized RKE transmitters available, follow this procedure to program up to eight RKE transmitters. This procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The vehicle must be off and all of the RKE transmitters you wish to program must be with you.
  1. Remove the key lock cylinder cap.
  2. Insert the vehicle key of the RKE transmitter into the key lock cylinder located on the outside of the driver door and turn the key to the unlock position, counterclockwise, five times within 10 seconds. The DIC displays REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
  3. Wait for 10 minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN and then press ENGINE START/STOP. The DIC will again display REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
  4. Repeat Step 2 two additional times. After the third time all previously known RKE transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. Remaining RKE transmitters can be relearned during the next steps. The DIC should now display READY FOR REMOTE # 1.
  5. Place the new RKE transmitter into the storage bin with the buttons facing up.
  6. Press ENGINE START/STOP. When the RKE transmitter is learned, the DIC will show that it is ready to program the next transmitter.
  7. Remove the RKE transmitter from the storage bin and press [LOCK] . To program additional RKE transmitters, repeat Steps 4–6. When all additional RKE transmitters are programmed, press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
  8. Put the key back into the transmitter.
  9. Replace the key lock cylinder cap.
