New Opel Performance Sport Seat: Tailored for the Insignia GSi
-Developed in-house: Combines lateral support and long-distance comfort
-Built in-house: Key components from the Opel plant in Kaiserslautern
-AGR certified: Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. confirms exemplary ergonomics
-Fully equipped: Ventilation, heating, massage function, adjustable side bolsters

Excellent seats are just as much part of Opel as the iconic Blitz on the grille. The Rüsselsheim-based carmaker offers AGR certified (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.) ergonomic seats for a wide range of models starting with the sub-compact Opel Crossland X. The latest development in seating technology with outstanding lateral support and best long-distance comfort is now celebrating its debut in the new sporty flagship, the Opel Insignia GSi and the GSi Sports Tourer. The AGR-certified Opel performance sport seat comes with all advanced features already known from the top-of-the-range seats available for the Insignia. The integral seat in the GSi also comes with ventilation, heating, a message function and adjustable side bolsters. These features are complimented by the high backrest with integrated headrest in the sportiest member of the Insignia line-up. In addition, the belt route at shoulder height is exemplary – not a given for integral sports seats. Customers can also choose between two premium leather combinations, while a discreet GSi logo adorns the back rest.

The length, depth, cushion and back angle of the seats that looks like a king cobra ready to strike can all be adjusted electrically. The air cushions of the four-way lumbar support along with the variable side bolsters are also activated electrically. All of these settings can be saved via the memory button – only the seat depth adjustment needs to be done manually. The ventilation and the heating are integrated in the cushion and backrest. In addition, the driver can enjoy a back massage. Overall the sum of sporty side support and comfort features makes the new performance seat a unique offer – developed in the competency centre for healthy seating in Rüsselsheim.

First ultra-sporty looking performance seat entirely from a manufacturer

Normally, carmakers buy the extra-sporty integral seats from a specialised supplier. However, this is very different in the case of the Opel Insignia GSi. The Technical Development Centre can draw on a vast amount of competence when it comes to seat structures. The concept for the second generation of the Insignia always foresaw a modular system with the integral performance seat forming the pinnacle. This enabled all of the comfort features to be maintained in a thoroughbred sport seat. Furthermore, the Opel in-house development also delivers on stylish highlights: the hinted guides for shoulder belts in the back rest look exactly like the air intakes at the front of the Opel Insignia GSi and demonstrate the outstanding attention to detail.

The base structure of the performance seat also stems from Opel. The key steel elements are from the plant in Kaiserslautern. The unified development and production of the new bucket seat also results in significant weight savings. While the sport seat – without any of the comfort features available in the GSi – weighs 28 kilogrammes in the Corsa OPC which has been on the market for some years, the new integral seat with all its functionalities only adds 26 kilogrammes to the Opel Insignia GSi.

I don't know what to do. I bought one of these cars and cannot drive it because the seats are so damaging to my back. After the first 2 days of driving my new GS I could hardly walk. It forces my lower back into a backward tilt that jams the vertebra together and pinches the nerves. I can't drive the car. I can't even sit in it for more than a few minutes. Can the sports seats be swapped out for the regular seats? Mechanically it fits but will the electric connections work?

How much effort have you put into adjusting the driver's seat. There are ways to adjust the seat:
1. Front to back relative to the pedals.
2. Raise or lower the seat bottom.
3. Tilt the seat bottom.
4. Change the angle of the seat back.
5. Adjust the lumbar support in the seat back
6. Adjust the width between the bolsters on the side of the seat.
7. Adjust the thigh supports on the front of the seat bottom.

I've got to believe some combination of these adjustments would make the at acceptable to just about anyone.

I would try reaching out to Rory...he has put GS seats in his TourX and would be a good resource. If I remember correctly the drivers side worked but not the passenger since in the TourX we don't have memory there...so besides losing the massage and cooling the passenger will be losing it's memory. He might know how different the harnesses are to see if there will be other problems.

But if you go that route you should post your location and interior color. You might have people willing to take those off your hands, trade etc.

Thanks, that’s good news that there is some interchangeability. My concern is the seat control unit in the dash. The GS has the cooling control and the essence doesn’t. My dealer thinks the control unit is the same part number for both models so I am hoping it will plug right in.
Good idea to post my GS seats on the forum. I found a used set of good essence seats on the web. I think it best I try them and make sure they work before I sell the originals. How can I connect with Rory? I would like to reach out to him about his experience but I couldn’t find him on the forum.

Member's name is misspelled above. It's @RoRi. You should check out his sports tourer thread. There may be useful information there already.

Thanks much. I found the post and read the whole thing. He is doing an interesting build, I wonder if he could adapt the GS active suspension to his TourX. At any rate I posted my question about the seat and am sure he can help me.

So are you saying it has too much lumbar, and it doesn't have enough adjustment? Can you post a photo of your seat?

The problem is at the base of my back. I have a back that doesn't like being bent backwards down there. The GS seat has no support in that region, Essence does a bit, and the dished out seat pad on the GS tilts my pelvis back in a way that pinches the nerves. Compare The Essence seat on top to the GS below:

I'm personally not a fan of lumbar support, so I always have to make sure it's fully retracted. It'll sneak out if another driver has turned on the massage function (which I don't like either). So maybe make sure you push the rear part of the disc in the seat adjustment area to fully retract it.

Thanks for the tip. I spent a lot of time trying all the combination of adjustments; retracted lumbar supports, moved it up and down, spread out the side bolsters, leaned back and forward, up and down, tilted the seat, etc., and nothing makes it go away. I also own a motorbike, a cargo van and have had several other cars over the years. This is the first time I have had this problem. Everybody's back is different. That seat and I just don't get along.

I have swapped GS seats out for essence seats and it will work fine. All the controls work and the heated seat. Obviously the cooling option won't work cause only the GS has cooling and massage.

Thanks, for the good news. That's what I am going to do. Just curious before I go ahead, how do you like the essence seats compared to the GS?

Hey OP if you're anywhere near NJ I'd be happy to do a seat swap from my Essence!

That's a good offer but I live in Toronto and can't get across the border because of the pandemic. I want to hang on to the originals until I know the essence seats work but will keep you in mind when I am able to cross down.

I swapped out mainly for looks, I thought the GS seats looked a bit much. But the essence seats feel good, they aren't quite as hard and super-firm as the GS seats. I like them. Good luck finding a set.
