GMRedline's Intro Thread

That example was on a supercharged car. They are totally different beasts. The "general" rule for the LSJ (Supercharged 2.0L ecotec) is about +5hp per added degree of timing with diminishing returns over ~23*. And just adding boost to a supercharged engine does not always increase HP. Boost is a measure of restriction. More restriction is not always better. When you pulley down on a supercharged car it creates more parasitic HP loss because the engine has to spin the supercharger faster and under more pressure and more heat. Depending on the application, a supercharger can cause between 35-50bhp loss just spinning it under boost.

🙂

My bad. Since this is a GS turbo thread I thought we would be talking about GS turbos.

GMREDLINE welcome to this forum. I remember you!!
( But I was "on the other side" then)
I was reading the redline forums to see what folks were doing, and screwing up on the LSJ engines!!

I'm retired now!

Hey GMRedline, I had an O5 Cobalt SS/SC and was a founding member/moderator of CobaltSS.net. I also ran tuners.cobaltss.org for a while, but lost interest when I sold the cobalt.

I recognized your handle.

I am still active on both RLFs and CSS. Things have certainly changed in the last few years. As the ION Redline and the Cobalt SS are reaching their 3rd and 4th owners there is a whole new younger community. No offense to anyone who might be young but 16-22 year old's don't care about learning about their car. They just want to be told how to fix it. They don't have the money to fix it right so they take short cuts which causes more problems. It takes all the fun out of being a moderator and an active Senior member.

There was just a kid who started a "Holy f*ck what did I do?!?" thread because there was engine oil all over his engine bay and transaxle after an oil change. Well he forgot to put the oil filter cap on tight....

So yeah.

I don't recognize that handle on the CSS.net forum, I don't get to the redlineforums as much, but I don't remember it there either.

I am ebristol on CSS.

I decided to go with a Trifecta Tune. I got the PCM calibration from Vince but I am waiting on the TCM calibration. I have not loaded either to the vehicle yet.

Man lots of folks missing the man pedal on their rides.

May I be excused if my family sedan daily driver has the slushbox if I still row the gears in a bottom 11 second car?

tune for the six speed auto?

Yes? 🙂

I got a man pedal on my Redline.

So I loaded the PCM calibration and went for a short ride. I did 4 3rd gear pulls from 3,000rpms to 6500rpms. Two with the stock tune and two with the new tune.

Even with the Trifecta tune the car feels slow as balls! lol But that is really not surprising considering what I am coming from. I sent the log to Vince for feedback.

I've installed the Trifecta tune but I'm pretty sure there wasn't a TCM calibration included in my file that was emailed. Should that have been included?

What will the TCM calibration do for me? Sorry if this is a stupid question..

Thanks

Chad

The TCM tune would only be for automatic transmissions. I asked Vince directly about the TCM and he said that he will be providing one.

A TCM tune will most likely firm up shift points and potentially increase the rpm where the transmission will shift from gear to gear.

i don't think there is a tune for the tcm...everyone wants to be able to use their IDC ,but i guess vince still needs a test car.

He said he has not made any progress on providing more information via the IDC.

You say at WOT but at what RPM? What's the graph look like for boost and timing from beginning to the end of a run?

TrifectaLog.png

The two runs in the middle of the log are with the Trifecta tune. The first and the last are stock. Green line is timing and Red line is RPMS.

Stock the tune starts at ~7* @ 3,000rpms and builds to ~13* @ 6,000rpms. The Trifecta tune starts at 4* at 3,000rpms and pretty much stays flat to 6,000rpms.

Maybe this is normal for his tunes? Has anyone else viewed the logs from their Trifecta tunes?

Yes mine is the same behavior with the Vince tune. I didn't investigate the stock tune behaviors, I am really just waiting on HP Tuners to release their beta for the LHU in the next few weeks/months.

Not having any control over the tune is pretty frustrating and there are many times when you downshift and boost only comes in at 12-13 PSI, which is frustrating to no end.

The reason I went with Vince was to NOT have to worry about learning how to tune this car. I asked him about a few things in the tune and he took offense which is understandable. I don't know anything about DI or VVT tuning so I was just going off of some of the things I read from other tuners. Then I decided to just let him do his thing. He has successfully tuned more ecotecs then almost all the other tuners combined! 🙂 I trust him.

I think my biggest issue is that this car is no where near as quick as my Redline. I was not expecting it to be as fast because it weights almost 600 pounds more. But I was expecting it to at least keep up with most factory "performance" cars on the road.

I think my expectations were too high.

I think we need to watch sales to see how the aftermarket will progress. It's very earlier in the life of the car. The fact HPT is behind the platform will make a big difference, and I hope ZZP steps up a bit more besides the Intake/Downpipe.

ZZP would probably make any product we asked for as long as someone was willing to give up their car for an appropriate amount of time. Cat-back, charged air pipes, Inter-cooler, A pillar gauge pod, etc.

I'd love an A pillar gauge pod (because not seeing the boost drives me crazy), and I'd be more than willing to give up my car to a shop that would make one, but unfortunately I'm not located anywhere near close enough to ZZP to be able to work with them. 🙁 🙁
