Not a good sound..

If you like great cheesecake check out the Whistle Stop bakery right near Sonny's on the other side of the street.
I'm very familiar with that spot! My family and I have had it many times. It's great!

They're "only" about 3½ hours from me. My transmission is not "bad", but has a clunk if I almost come to a stop and then add throttle. It acts like it has to shift down a gear or two and then slams into it.

I had that exact issue and it never got better, even with new fluid and the transgo shift kit. The transgo kit only fixed the hard shift from 2nd to 3rd. The only way I was able to avoid that clunk/bang, was to always come to a complete stop then go. Your transmission will probably self destruct like mine did. Just give it time and baby it like I did mine.

Thank you for those insightful words!

That kinda tips me from this fence I'm sitting on. I'll start saving up some $$$ and see about getting an appointment while I can still drive it there.

For me, so long as the rest of the car remains usable, it's cheaper than replacing the car and starting all over again. It rides so nice and gets such good mileage, plus all the money I've already spent on keeping it viable: new tires, new WS, new water pump and metal elbows, new t-stat and hoses, new serp belt.

And as Yul Brenner once said in The King and I: "Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera."

I had the same symptoms of a slip and a slamming back into gear unless I came to a full stop. The TransGo shift kit solved the lazy 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 shifts but didn't solve the clunk. It's possible that the tranny mounts were THAT bad but I really don't know.

Yea same here. Your transmission was just tired like mine.

That's why im replacing the transmission. Once this is fixed, the car is good to go for the long run.

I have no idea how this happened. Last winter I did a drain and fill with good fluid, new filter and a transgo shift kit. Everything went well. I always and still did have a issue with the car banging into gear when I came to a brief stop and accelerated and the car also occasionally stalled when going into reverse. It never got worse, but never got better. Yesterday I was leaving somewhere and I heard this grinding sound and then it got worse until I dropped the pan today and saw metal soup.
Can you show me the condiriton of the pipe that i recommended replacement but you decided against it and got the clamp , did you have 2nd magnet on filter too
And did you ever check the instrument cluster out visually before, therees a chance it was swapped at some point and the mileage was not right
There hsould be digital evidence of the original possibly in scan tool menus , for like date of manufacture

What pipe? Yes there was also the updated magnet on the filter. There was no chunks attached to it, there was only chunks on the pan magnet.

I actually thought the mileage may be incorrect, but everything is consistent on the carfax since day one. Honestly, I think this car was just very poorly maintained.

Sounds like sprockets/chains on the transmission to me, but i dont see evidence of final drive bad. does the sound only occur while moving or is it possible when idle not spinning

Sound was only present when the car was driven and it was loud. Confirmed this by putting it on the lift I have access to and putting it in drive.

This all happened in a matter of 24 hours.

If its only while spinning, its actually most likely the differential/final drive.

The clamp on the lube pipe (or replacement gm one, the one we have threads about) is for repairing the 6 piece rubber hose and pipe and clamp assembly which loses pressure/volume to the differential and final drive as well as the bearings and stuff at the output for the cv axle on the passenger side

The clamp keeps the original working the hose replacement prevents failure at all, but your mileage wouldnt mean much wear would have occured before. do you have the lube pipe clamp in use?

My final drive also bit dirt so felt that pain

If the circulation of debris wasnt severe theres a *chance* you could just replace the final drive and it may continue. but the coolers and everything.. just dont chance it id say (you are getting rebuild so good )

I never touched the clamp on the lube pipe. Only service I did was new filter, gasket, transgo kit and fluid. The transgo kit did its job but the banging into gear from a stop never went away, along with the stalling in reverse.

The noise was only present on the drivers side.

I also added lubegard after the last fluid change I did, which I hope didn't attribute to this mess.

Are you saying this transmission was possibly repairable? 🤔

Oh it may be the chains or the related to the output bearing in the case. Hmm.

I’m not saying it was long term fixable , I’m saying it was probably tourniquet on a compound fracture leg with a major blood loss lol

But you should do the upgraded Lube pipe or sonnax clamp of both in the next one
@2000ltd he’s doing both iirc

I'm sure those shifts are buttery smooth. I know mine are. They do good work.
Feels brand new. They also replaced the transmission lines and rear mount. I dealt with Rich when I dropped the car off and dealt with Sunny when I picked it up.
