Is it needed to replace the thermostat housing gasket, not the gasket on the thermostat itself, when replacing the thermostat?

Just use the tapered rubber gasket that wraps around the thermostat itself. I have never had to use a paper gasket on the housing.

I replaced my t-stat a couple weeks ago. There is a slight seepage at the mating surfaces, which is what led me to replace it in the first place.

I used the rubber-ish O-ring that came with the new t-stat. Since there was no gasket for the mating surfaces, I didn't think to make one. I wonder if I should disassemble it, add some RTV, and put it back together?

I looked for a fel pro or similar gasket for it and couldn't find one but I noticed if buying the actual tstat housing it comes with one. Hmm

Did you install O'ring gasket in the correct replacement way? If it is basackwards, it will leak!

I looked at the O-ring and did not see any obvious signs to install it one way or the other. I guess it would be good for me to crack it open and inspect it, eh?

Before I do, can you share some insight on how to determine the correct orientation? I saw no instructions with my t-stat so I concluded that it was reversible. Maybe not!

Mine was already installed on the thermostat I can send you photos of it later tonight if you want? I'm assuming they put it on the right way

It is tapered with the smaller diameter down.

Hoo-boy. I think I'll set aside some time this weekend...
The thermostat would not sit flush if the tapered gasket was installed upside down.

Take a look at the GM Genuine. The seal is installed correctly.
