- Buick Ownership
- 2015 Buick Verano
I've owned my 2015 Buick Verano for about a year now. A great ride, a great price, very satisfied overall. But: (Here we go...) Something has been a minor irritation for me since Day 1.
I have 3,000 + songs on my iPhone 6s 128 GB. I don't subscribe to Spotify or any other subscription / streaming services. There's just a few 'gigs' set aside for songs on my phone. Most are MP3s.
The Intellilink system uses Gracenote to detect and display a song's album cover on the Intellilink screen when it reads the MP3 ID3 tag info. It's great when it can detect the artist and correctly display the proper album cover; not so much when it aims high but misses. If Gracenote cannot find the artists' album cover it does interesting things. It might display the genre (Alternative, Rock, Country) as an cheesy image instead. Or, it might pull up a picture of the artist or band rather than an album cover. God knows where these pictures come from, but most are black and white distortions skewed to fit in the box on the screen.
I spend a little over an hour a day commuting, so I have time to ponder things of great importance at stoplights. Where does Gracenote find such ugly pictures? Why can't you turn off Gracenote? (You can't). Why does the Bachman Cummings album "Jukebox" display the generic Bluetooth logo rather than some random ugly picture? Epiphany! Gracenote has no idea who or what Bachman Cummings is! (The Jukebox album was a one - off special from two great musicians. Highly recommended). So... if I were to fool Gracenote by hiding the artist's name somehow, Intellilink is forced to display the Bluetooth logo, which I find much more visually appealing if the album art can't be found.
Sifting through my trusty Windows character map I decided to use the ǂ symbol in front of the artist names where I don't want Gracenote to display anything and the Bluettoth logo is displayed instead. This hack works wonderfully and as an added bonus Intelllink doesn't recognize the ǂ symbol so it is ignored and is never displayed on the Buick Intellilink screen. It does display on my iPhone screen but I don't think it looks that bad.
Here's what it looks like on the Intellilink screen:
