Our techniques were very similar. I anchored my aluminum plate with generous amounts of liquid steel epoxy on two LeSabres (so far, lol).

Ran into the same issue a couple years back.. .used a mix of bondo/fibreglass resin in that area...had to work fast.
Also... reminded myself to quit slamming it shut.
