Hello everybody - Merry Christmas,

I've been having issues with the Traction Control/ABS lights coming on and off for awhile now and found the issue; on the passenger side front wheel the wire leading to the ABS/TC sensor is broken. Both wires on plastic connector are sheared off. There are 2 thin black wires coming from the hub side and I think the wires are black and green on the plastic plug on the end of the wire coming from the engine compartment. I'm wondering if I can just splice them back together and where the wires go exactly?
I did a search and found a couple people had the same problem but no repair was posted that I could find.

Any help would be appreciated, it's my wife's car and I still like her (mostly) and want to get it fixed before the ice age sets in here in Chicago.

Thanks & Happy Holidays,

Frank

Yes, splice them back together. The wires go from the wheel bearing to the ABS module.

Great !

Thanks a lot, you helped me plan my saturday,

Merry Christmas,

Frank

Hello,
Sorry for the delay, as it turns out I wound up doing the repair yesterday instead of Saturday.
It all went OK, I do not have any photos so I will try and describe it the best I can.
What I had was the wires broken at the connector, one end (coming from the engine compartment) was hanging down. The other end (hub side) had 2 thin black wires. What I did was use a old plug from a wiring harness I had laying around so I could still disconnect the wires if I needed to.
The hardest part was the black wires were short so it was hard to strip the ends, then solder the other wires on. I didn't want to use solder-less connectors. Before I connected the other end I just twisted the wires together to check and see if the dash lights went out. They did so I soldered everything, wire tied the connector to the little tab near the hub. FYI; the engine side wires were green and yellow, I guess there is no difference to where they connect.
We have driven the car a little bit and the dash lights have been off so everything seems fine, on ice the ABS seems to be working.
One last thing, I did disconnect the battery so the codes got cleared and there was no chance of shorting anything out. I choose not to wear safety googles.
Hope that helps, and thanks to the forum for the help as well,
Frank

OBD2 can't be cleared by unhooking the battery. The ABS light isn't the same as the Service Engine Soon light, it doesn't need to be reset, if the light is off, the system is working fine. Just an FYI

Great, thanks for the heads up on the codes.

So far, everything seems to be working. I'll be checking out the drivers side wires once it warms up.

Thanks again,
Frank

My DH loves his 'vouz but this is a chronic issue with them .. Poor poor design .. The wire is actually stretched when turning the wheel causing it to break or pull out .. I think they finally ended up taping the connectors together and sorta rearranging the wire so there was a little more slack.

When I researched it for him there were those that just spliced in more length and that fixed the issue

hope this helps
Ria

What is a real kick in the teeth is the sensor is a intergral part of the hub, at least it is in a 02. The dealer replaced the right hub twice and the left once. After they are replaced at a dealer they have a lifetime warrenty. It's really been the only problem we have had besides a body control modual at 20K.
