I just changed my thermostat. I found the stock temp is 195, but noticed an "updated" "aftermarket" temp of 180*. I see where people have said having it run a little cooler, is better. One person said it may get a little bit better mileage and has less wear and tear running a little cooler.

As we where finishing, a friend stopped by. He is a master Mechanic. When we told him I got a cooler temp, he brought up lots of stuff wrong with going with a lower temp.

It's going to get worse gas mileage. He brought up an old car, when it's cold, the choke comes on, what happens? It puts more fuel in.

On this car, all the sensors and fuel system is set up for a certain temperature. If it is colder, your car thinks it hasn't warmed up yet.

I drove home afterwords, it never got above 176* (bled it but still might have air, will do it again in the morning). I do keep in mind this is winter. Our summers are in the 90's and 100's, so it may be better in the summer then now.

Who ever thought of this 180* thing? Anybody have experience with using both?

Thank you,
Chris.

I run an 180° thermostat year around and have never noticed any increase/decrease in fuel consumption, except for the winter fuel blends, which can be expected to get less! The engine/PCM goes into closed loop at about 140° or less, so there is need to worry about that.

Thank you for the reply. So far, it runs around 172*.

I wish I could get one that was in between.

If the OEM is 195, what made you go to a 180?

I went to the 180 also,it helps keep tranny temps down a little. I also noticed here in CA. It made no difference in me
passing emissions.I've not seen any diff in mpg, either. Having your car run
a little cooler is not a bad thing imho. Pete

I just replaced mine, since I was in there anyway. But I installed a 195 for the heat in the heater, & not anything to do with other things. Cooler engine coolant usually helps power output though, like a 160* etc...
