where is the starter right side or left side
turn the key and all dash lights come on
but no starter click
have a jumper battery hooked to the original battery

The starter is located below the front exhaust manifold, or right side of engine if facing the belt driven accessories. When you first turn on the ignition key (not starting) does the security light flash for 2-3 sec and then go out, or does it remain on?

the light flashes for 2 or 3 seconds and then goes out
I can start the engine shorting crossed the starter solenoid
but it won't keep running it runs a couple seconds and then stops
what else is hooked to the same wire as the solenoid?

The nest thing to check is the purple wire going to the starter solenoid which should have 12v when trying to start, does it have 12v? The diagram below is the starting circuit and is the same as an 1992 PA.

I am not sure about the service light I don't see one that says service on it
where is it located
sounds like to me my key has gone bad and we only have one key for the ignition so I can't try another key like the book says
it says if the key is bad the starter won't start and it also shuts off the gas

The security light is located in the panel above the instrument cluster. Are you sure you saw it flash for a few seconds, then go out? Have you tried cleaning the resistor in the key. You can use a pencil eraser, or alcohol wipes to clean the key, then try again.

is the light the, service engine soon light the light you are talking about
if it is that won't help me because it stays on all of the time and has for over 3 years
I have a dr. appointment so I won't get back to the problem until
Thursday.
thanks for your help so far and I will post what I have tried and found in a couple days.

NO, it is the security light which should flash several times, then go off within a few seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON.

I don't see any light like that
maybe the bulb is burned out
or maybe it is the key

I don't have the 12 volts to the solenoid I can short across solenoid and engine will stat for a second
so it has the injectors shut down too.

do you think this would work the easiest and cheapest way the program on utube

I don't have 12 volts on the purple wire going to the solenoid but can start it with a screwdriver across the solenoid but only runs a second
so must have the injectors shut down too
gm bypass done easy and cheapest is the title of a thing on u-tube

sorry about all of the duplicates I didn't notice it had started another page

Some models had plugs (terminals) for the connection, other did not. You will have to discover what you have when you do the bypass surgery.

I need a good picture of the plug that the wire from ignition cylinder VATS plugs into under the dash

I found where that is plugged in it is a very large plug with several wires but no room to see how to remove the plug but if I move about 6"s away from that plug I can cut the 2 white wires and attach my resistors to the 2 wires going to that large plug and see if that lets me start the car and if not I can solder the wires back to the solenoid and search farther.
does that sound ok?
