I have a 1993 LeSabre and bought one of those (2-volume) GM Service Manual sets for the 1993 LeSabre/Park Avenue and have been tracking down a code that my cars has been showing.

Problems:

DTC code 18 (Cam/Crank Error)

If I let it get up to op. temp and nail it (floor it) while driving, it will shudder and 'gag' and flash a "service engine soon" light until the next time i restart the car. I have had the cam and crank sensors replaced and checked all the wiring and found some cracked insulation around some wires and replaced them. The code will not go away and has been causing problems accelerating, especially getting on the freeway.

Any ideas what would cause this code?

Thanks, -Jon

It may be the cam magnet (known as the camshaft position sensor interrupter) has dislodged or broken. This was somewhat of a problem with the L27 engine. You can remove the cam sensor and rotate the engine to view the magnet in the gear using a mechanics mirror. If it is missing or cracked you found the problem. You can also test the electrical functions following the procedure in this link: http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/gm/3.8L/how-to-test-the-cam-sensor-1
