Who has seen this before... I have a 97 riviera supercharged. It runs perfect. But twice, it has stalled out abrubtly, quickly, just from 55 to 70 mph to dead and coasting! Turn key off and then restart, and it starts right up and drives perfect until next time it cuts off going over 55 mph. No current codes but did have p1674 logged ( tachometer control circiut) I cleared the code and am waiting for the car to repeat it's fault and see if the p1674 will log again. I really don't want to shotgun parts as it can be expensive. I don't have the service manual to help troubleshoot it. Thanks in advance for any assistance

If it cuts out quickly, it is usually ignition. The crank position sensor is a common problem that can result in the stalling you describe.

Thanks Larry, I tend to agree with you on the crank position sensor. But what about the code p1674? Is it not related? Do you think that a crank position sensor code should have been displayed, or, not really? thanks again, Mike

I've heard of the CPS causing stalling as you describe. I'm not sure there is a fault code for the CPS. Never heard of code P01674.

P1674 - Tachometer Control Circuit

Hope this helps. You might want to buy a diagnostics tool for your car which spells it out. Much easier than trying to figure out the codes.

I know that when mine stalled out originally after I bought my car it did the same as yours. Come to find out that it was my internal voltage regulator inside my alternator that made it die even though I had originally replaced the crankshaft & camshaft sensors first, the only thing it seemed to do was to slow it down from dying till I replaced the alternator. Might want to take it in and get a free check at any auto part stores. Doesn't hurt to check.
