Hello there,

The check engine light came on my 1999 Buick LeSabre and when scanned the codes came up p0446 and was told fuel tank pressure sensor needs to be replaced.

Could you tell me the location of the fuel tank pressure sensor on the 1999 Buick LeSabre Custom and do I have to drop the tank? Thanks,

what diagnostic steps were taken, besides getting the p0446 code, that confirm that the fuel tank pressure sensor must be replaced? There will be many reasons for the p0446 code.

In the 1998 FSM the P0446 says the vacuum does not decrease rapidly enough when the vent valve is commanded back open (no current).
My first checks would be hoping for a bad or clogged vent valve that sticks closed when it's supposed to open back up. You should support the car very well and prepare to remove the vent valve for testing. It is likely held on with one bolt and a bracket.

The vent valve can be tested because with no current it should be open and air can be sucked through it. Apply current carefully with jumpers to the small contacts and it should snap closed blocking the air flow. I believe there's a sponge filter on the valve for the air that goes in through it.

If the vent valve is working fine, you may have a carbon canister that has been flooded with gasoline somehow and is blocked or partly clogged. There you might get one from a recyle yard or Rockauto.com, e.g..

You might find a kinked tube from the canister to the vent valve #14.

Hello, thank you for the replies. I brought the vehicle back in and they are replacing the vent valve solenoid and canister.

I had brake and engine work done a couple months ago and after I got the car back the check engine light came back on.
