Buick Ownership
2003 Lesabre Limited
I am looking for opinions, as I am conflicted and attached. The car in question is a 2003 LeSabre with 87,000 miles, daily commuter. We bought it for $4000 in July 2015 with ~40,000 miles and hail damage. It was a one owner, a woman in her 80s that had passed. Garaged and claimed to never be driven in winter. It was clean, and looked the part.

It is well optioned with leather, heated seats, rain sense wipers, head up display, auto leveling rear shocks etc. Interior is still quite clean.

While the hail damage never caused issues, the under body and rear wheel wells have taken a beating in our ownership. It was parked outside and has been driven the last 7 years in MN/WI winter. It was washed with underbody flush every 2 weeks or so in winter, and monthly in summer. Still, rust never sleeps.

The rockers are in bad shape but not entirely rotted away. The subframe is in good shape and bushings are intact. My main concern now is the rear top spring shackles. Last time I replaced the rear shocks, they were filled with sand, the paint was gone, and the metal was flaking. I cleaned them up, sanded, then painted them. The welds still look intact but I am not sure how long those will last. If they break, I believe it will deem the car undrivable. The inner wheel wells are flaking significantly as well, with plenty of rust showing through. No leaking in the trunk through that area, yet.

Recent maintenance is quite significant. Past two years (about 8,000 miles) its had front struts, rear shocks, trans fluid/filter change, headlight and turn signal bulbs, blower motor, air filter, cabin filter, muffler, battery, tires, MAF sensor, plugs, wires, all 3 coils, and ICM. As far as I know, everything else is original.

In the current market, I believe I could still get $2000 or better, and put it toward a better shape vehicle.

Drive it until it falls apart or sell it while it still runs, drives, and stops?

Wow, you just summarized 7 paragraphs into 1 short question ... you must be from Stack Exchange. Just kidding. Good information goes a long way. The answer is in your statement "rust never sleeps."

You say $2000 resale value today, so what about in 6 months, or 1 year? I would say it's a pretty steep slope toward zero. You have had a good ride. A good Buick Lesabre ride. Now you are ready for ... ?

Any other time a vehicle purchase would be easy and finding a reasonably priced car would be simple process. Taking that route of selling it you may want to check what is really available in your area and budget.

As most the repairs have been done and at 87k if you can live with and/or patch the rust spots keep it as you couldn't find a $2000 vehicle that may be in that good condition.

Honestly keep it and just drive it, I have a 95 lesabre for over 20 years and rust is the issue also but the vehicle won't die so it's still in use.

The two previous posters bring up some very good points. If you’re still happy with the car I suggest you find a good welder who can repair your rear suspension mounts. If he’s honest he’ll let you know if the job is worth the trouble or if it’s too far gone.

My ‘02 Limited is equipped just like your ‘03 and I wouldn’t be able to find anything comparable for $2k. 😁

That kinda like yours or is it worse?

you got your money's worth and then some. sell it now at the peak.

I would be on the lookout for another vehicle that has not seen such harsh winter salts, while still maintaining the one that I still drive. Luck favors the prepared.

It seems as though the opinions are split. I appreciate the input from everyone!

After looking the past week in my area for a decent vehicle, it is quite hard to find something decent AND affordable. Decent shape Park Avenue's with average mileage are going for $6K+. I spotted a roached out 1993 Honda Accord with over 300,000 miles for $5K 😮. Crazy times.

With a balance of the recent work I put into the car and some help from my father, who has a welder, I may be able to squeeze some years out of it. It's currently a point A to B work commuter at the moment that my toddler rides in occasionally.

Here are some pictures from last year (sorry they are not better shots) when I replaced the rear shocks, so it can only be worse now. However, I did try to grind as much as I could, then cover in a high-zinc compound.

Throwback to when my wife and I first got the car in 2015.

Is that a LeSabre rear subframe?
that is a lesabre/park avenue/bonneville/aurora/(Deville or el dorado I forget which)/riviera subframe that is 1998 to 2005 with small variations and a few pn differences that existed too.
The cali emissions cars had a bracket on them too which is used for AIR pump
