Just picked up a 2004 Buick from a guy on offerup. Has almost 190k. When I got it he told me the only thing wrong was that the driver side wheel bearing needs replacing and it needs a new "gas cap". I'm a young guy so I don't know too much about cars. I didn't see any warning lights. So I bought it for $850. It drives great other than the noise from the bearing. So i'm driving it home and I smell gas. I' remembered the gas cap. But i by this time I autozone was closed. So the next day goes by I had the windows up. I drove to work fine. Still no warning lights. So halfway through the next day. I start the car up and I see the check engine light on. I'm cussing up a storm. So I remembered the gas cap could cause it. I go to autozone. Buy a gas cap. Still the warning comes up. He runs the scanner and the only thing that pops up is the loose gas cap code. So he said I may need a whole new gas tank next filler. Which costs 499. I looked on the web and found one for 150. So im asking have you guys ever run into this ? Is that what it is the neck filler ?

You will need to either have the code erased and see if it comes back or wait to see if it clears itself, which can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

Without the actual code, it is rather difficult to say what MIGHT be wrong.

The fuel filler neck is about $65 on Amazon. Easy to replace. Mine is badly rusted, and will not seal. If yours is not rusty, a new cap may do it.

the code typically points to a failure in the evaporative control system. The easiest fix is to replace the gas cap but the problem could be caused by other reasons. If there is no obvious fuel leak than you need a smoke test. As others have stated you need to post the actual code, PXXX.

My Amazon filler tube came today, perfect fit, so far, no code. If yours has rust pits, this is most likely the cure.

Do NOT drop a lit match in the tank to create smoke!!! L M F A O
