My end goal: have an extra keyfob transmitter (don't care about the key) in case I lock my keys in the car.

I bought a keyfob from Amazon for a 2011 Buick Regal. The car was used and it only came with one keyfob. So I just want an extra transmitter because I have locked my one and only key in the car before.

According to the instructions, I have to put the old key into the lock cylinder first and then put the new “key” into the lock cylinder in order to program the new transmitter. But the new “key”, of course, is not cut to my lock cylinder. So it's a conundrum... a "catch-22"!

  1. So is there a way to program the new keyfob without the key being cut? Can I maybe open the case of my old keyfob and temporarily swap the old key into the new case in order to get the new fob programmed?
  2. I have a MUCAR VO6 OBD2 scanner/programmer, but I don’t know if it has the function to reprogram the keyfob?? Any ideas about if this can be done with an OBD2 programmer and what I should be looking for?
Amazon.com

If I wanted a key, would it have to be ordered from Buick? Or can a locksmith actually cut the blank key? I probably don’t want to do this, though, as I’m guessing it will be expensive?? Either way, any ideas on the cost of getting a key... by ordering or getting one cut??

Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated! Otherwise, I just need to return the keyfob I bought from Amazon.

Why cannt you have the key in the new FOB cut by a locksmith?

Can I? I don't know. If you don't know, it's not a "regular" key. It's one of those weird flip keys that come out of the side of the keyfob and has the grooves cut on both sides of the key. Is this easy for a locksmith to duplicate? And is it expensive?

Anyhow, because of my ignorance with this sort of key, that's why I posted this:

Okay, I just called a mobile locksmith. So apparently it's not "too costly" to have a key cut, even with this odd key. I had no idea. He told me $40... I'm guessing that's probably a fair price?? And then I'll have an extra key, anyhow, in case the original gets lost. Probably the best course of action.

A Mobile will be more than if you drive to one.

Could you take the battery out from the one with the correct key, and keep the one you are programming right next to it while doing the procedure?

If the locksmith situation doesn’t work, you can get a fob with flip key from some hardware stores. An Ace Hardware near me was able to replace mine a couple years ago for $90. They programmed it. Unlike Internet sources, Guaranteed to work or you didn’t pay. Dealership was several hundred dollars.

Alright, end story, my cost: $38 + tax. And everything works. So that's a $13 key from Amazon and $25 cutting fee at a local locksmith in Plano, TX.

The locksmith has a machine that "scanned" my old key and then cut the new one. He said he could cut about any kind of key. Pretty cool, I had no idea they could do that. I figured you'd have to get the dealer to order one.

Anyhow, put the original key into the ignition, turned it to the run position. Pulled out the original key and popped in the new one and turned to the run position within 5 seconds and that was it. Pretty easy. The car learned the new keyfob. So now I have both an extra key and keyfob.

Thanks for all the comments and advice!

Take the new key to Ace hardware and have it cut then use the old key to program the new one...all instructions are on youtube
