I was wondering if the F40 missions have check plugs on them? If so, what is the hex size? Also, what is the hex size for fill and drain plugs?

So 39 views and no responses? I guess nobody changes their fluid?

This may help, but getting a service manual may be considered a option if you are looking to do more.

That video pretty much nails it. Since these transmissions don't have a dipstick or a 'fill it until it pours out of this hole' design, I'd recommend catching what you take out and putting that same amount back in, unless you had a reason to believe that the level was not correct when you started.

And I've reused both the drain and fill plugs many times... I don't know why they'd say you need a new one, but mine have never leaked.

I have seen that the refill level is 1.9 or 2.2 quarts. Anyone have any insight on the correct level? I definately have reason to believe it was not at the correct level. The previous owner mentioned it had a slight drip when he loaded it up on the trailer, that he never noticed before. He thinks his new mechanic was to blame.

Any recommendations for fluids?

I have a factory '12 service manual, and here is exactly what it says:

"On FWD vehicles, fill the transmission with 2.2 liters of transmission fluid, a residue of approximately 0.2 liters remains in the transmission.
On AWD vehicles, fill the transmission with 1.6 liters of transmission fluid, a residue of approximately 0.2 liters remains in the transmission.

Note: if a new transmission is installed during servicing, this must be filled with 1.8 liters of transmission fluid because the new transmissions are already filled with 0.68 liters of transmission fluid from the factory."

So, it's confusing because it's unclear if they are saying the 'capacity' of a FWD is 2.2, so you should put in 2.0 because 0.2 remains, or (more likely) the capacity is 2.4 liters and you should put in 2.2 because 0.2 stays in. But then there is only one 'note' about new transmissions (is that a new FWD or new AWD???) and the numbers don't add up because 1.8 plus 0.68 is 2.48, which doesn't jive with either of the other numbers, let alone both of them.

That's why my recommendation was to just put in what you took out, but if you think you had a leak, I'd probably let it drain really good and put 2 back in. It's all splash lubricated, so the exact amount probably isn't super critical. I'd still catch and measure what you take out to get an idea of where you're at.

I'm running Amsoil Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube (75W-90) API GL-4, and it seems to me exactly like the factory fill... OK once warm.. not so good when cold.

I noticed that Redline does not recommend 75W-90 and recommends 75W-85 instead. What do you think of this: MT-85 75W85 GL-4 Gear Oil

I think a 75W85 is what the factory fluid is rated, so that makes sense, but I'd consider a higher weight (like the 75w-90 or even higher) if you'll be tracking the car. Either is probably fine.

I'm pretty sure there is a compromise here between cold fluid shift quality and high temperature transmission protection.

Good video. I'd put a funnel in an empty 1 quart oil bottle or something with measurement when draining to know exactly how much you got.

I just drained and filled mine due to a trans oil loss when my right side out put shaft came away from the differential housing.
I saved the drained oil and measured it. There was a little less that 2 quarts in my pan.
I put back 2.1 quarts of Amsoil 75W90 Severe Gear. It's my "go to" gear oil.
I use it in a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II boat drive that's rated to 300 HP. It is being turned by a built 383 that's north of 400. So I put Severe Gear in the F40 too since my 2.0 Ecotec has a tune in it.
I thought it would be a help to someone to see how much oil got away when the driveshaft was out of the trans.
