When the car is somewhat warm and is started up with AC on it makes fairly loud squealing noises until RPMs are above 1500 or so. Noise goes away until the next time it is started, only with AC on. Any ideas why this would happen?

It sounds like the bearing in the clutch on the AC compressor is bad since you only hear the squealing when the AC is on. Most auto parts stores sell the bearing if you want to try to replace it yourself.

Here's video showing how to check it and replace the bearing if it's worn out:

How many miles on the accessory drive belt?

Sometimes that AC adds just a little extra load that crosses the line between a squeeky belt and not. It happened on my 2011.

I agree but it would always squeal when the ac is on, not just when the ac clutch bearing is turning a certain rpm which is the case here.

Did it squeal all the time when the AC was on with your 2011 or just at a certain rpm? Also did you replace the belt and if so did the squeal go away? And another thing, did you spin the AC clutch pulley to check if it was bad?

What you may try is to open the hood and have someone else start the car in the condition you had in your post. Being mindful of a operating engine compartment as you may be able to listen and identify the area where it is coming from which may help on a solution.

I started as a mere chirping on start up, with the AC on, and progressed to a more steady chirping/squeel at low RPM that would go away when the AC clutch was not engaged. The AC clutch pulley was fine, and replacing the belt solved the issue. I think in general belts start squeeling at low RPMs first, I just think there is more load there that causes it. Once RPMs are up, I think the load isn't as much, or it is benefiting from inertia, or something. Not sure why it is that way, but I have seen it happen on other cars than my own.

Would be nice if the original poster updated us.

So my ac compressor rattles when I turn the ac on and it rattles even more when I put the car in gear. What did yours end up being?

i have a 2011 regal, changed the belt tensioner and idler and belt. only on cold start does it squeal and after a few minutes it goes away. sounds like it comes from the back of the engine
