94 Lesabre Shifter moves but stays in park

I have a 94 BUICK LESABRE AT the shifter on the column will move from park into the other gears but the transmission will not engage you can hear a difference in the engine when doing so but nothing happens really hoping I don't have to buy a a new tranny . Any help is greatly appreciated.

Could be very low trans fluid level. Start there. If the trans in 94 was a 4T60 you may also have a vacuum issue.
