Ever since I bought my 97 Park Ave (Base Model with Gran Touring Package) 15 years ago (with 50K miles on it at that time) it's had this problem.

For first 5-15 minutes after starting my 97 Park Ave, the power steering moans a little bit when NOT turning the steering wheel, and moans a lot when turning the steering wheel.

I changed from old stock AC Delco power steering fluid (PSF) to new Lucas PSF. That helped a little, but not enough. It still moaned. Then I changed to new Idemitsu PSF. That helped a little more, but not enough, it sill moans.

It stops moaning when car is partially warmed up. After 5-15 minutes there's no more moaning.

I recently read a post by @BuickGirlFromMars in which she said: "2003 and older park avenue have too small ps return line and pressure/not shaped well enough so if you have assist slow, but a tiny bit of rpm helps, you need lines not a pump /rack."

I'm wondering why my power steering pump moans and what I can do about it? Could it be caused by too small of a return line? If I installed a larger diameter return line, would I also need to install larger diameter hose fittings? If so, what would I need to do to install larger fittings? Would I have to install a different resevoir from a later model Park Ave?

Please provide as much detailed advice as possible. I'm an amatueur DIY person. If necessary, I could pass on instructions/advice from forum to my mechanic. He said he would appreciate advice on the above topic from Park Ave experts/enthusiasts.

I assume you completing drained the old fluid before using the new Lucas psf? Lucas is good so is Vavoline or Prestone.
Idemitsu PSF does not mix well unless you do a full drain and flush or use with a new pump and rack install. Also make sure your front end is good and fully greased (zerk fittings) and tire pressure is up to spec. Any drag can strain the pump.

Each time I changed PSF, the old PSF was completely flushed out and replaced with new PSF. There is no mixing of brands of PSF.

All frontend zerk fittings are freshly greased. Front tires pressure is 30 psi, as specified on sticker in door jam.

It sounds like you may have air in the system. After changing the fluid several times, how was the air in the system bled?

No you don’t need new fittings.

There is a tsb with part numbers, the actual return lines are routed differently and sized larger to permit more return fluid flow.
The reservoir is the same but there is a screeen inside it so a new one would mean fresh screen

You're my favorite Park Avenue expert! I love your posts!

Can I replace the power steering resevoir without replacing the pump, or are they permanently joined together as one part?

yes you can, i have a pump with a reservoir on it if you needed a visual, but there are two metal clips (I think) that you use a screw driver to release and then pull the tabs t o separate.

The reservoir has a screen in it and theres an o ring where it goes to the pump, i think.

Can my existing resevoir's existing screen be cleaned? If so, how? Or must it be replaced?

Does the screen typically need cleaning or replacement? My 97 Park Ave has 106K miles on it.

I already bought a new inlet hose (as you previously recommended in a thread, and recommended in a Buick servicse bulletin ), but haven't yet installed it.

I'm currently using Idemitsu PSF (full syn, 7.65 cSt @ 100KV). I put in Idemitsu PSF 3 months ago when I replaced all PSF in the system. Is it OK to continue using Idemitsu PSF? It claims to be compatible with Buick.
