Buick Encore GX 2020
I have a Buick Encore 2020 Select. I have noticed that the air conditioner clutch cycles on and off constantly. I have had the vehicle back to dealership three times about it and all three times they say that is the way the vehicle is made. I didn't notice it when I test drove the vehicle. They checked everything and said there is nothing wrong. Does anyone else have this issue? I owned a 2012 Verano for 8 years and never had this issue. In fact, I have never had this issue on any of my cars. I am baffled. I still think there is an issue here.

Thanks in advance.

Do you get consistent cold air or does the temperature vary?
When you say it cycles on and off what is the time of this cycling, seconds, minutes?
How did you determine it is cycling on and off?

Thanks for the answer and article. The clutch clicks on and then off every 30 or so seconds. I can hear the clicking on and off. My husband's pickup truck would do that when the refrigerant was low, so that's why we say it's the air conditioning clutch. The dealer says everything is good - checked two times. Maybe its just a characteristic of the GX, but I find it annoying.

Some vehicle when set to automatic or recirculation can have the AC compressor run. Not sure on settings, which if this is the case then it would be normal.

But here's a TSB that jas probably more information then the owners manual and maybe more than a dealer may know on a lot of the vehicles functions. Service Bulletin Bulletin No.: 20-NA-032 Date: February, 2020

Hi. Just a long shot here but do you have it on recycle so that it just cools the inside air instead of constantly having to cool the outside air coming in?

I can hear an intermittent click from A/C on my 2019 Encore when idling. See the linked post #4 below.

Many vehicles will utilize the compressor in varying settings including defog. I don't know what yours say but if there's a "Vent" option it should not use the compressor. If you have the HVAC set to OFF and it's still doing it, I would say there may likely be a problem.

Could always try another dealer. In a 100 mile radius there are several dealers I would and would not visit.

I have a 2014 Verano. The air conditioner started blowing hot air. The manager of the dealer ship is a friend and had it checked. He said the computer had compromised the air conditioning system and the guages were showing opposite of what they should be. Example low guage was showing high and high guage was low. He said the compressor and condensor had to be replaced and a complete purge had to be done. Has anyone ever heard of this?

I’m having the same issue with mine too. The service tech told me I was pushing the wrong buttons! LMAO! ‘I don’t think so Tim’. It never stayed on for the first few months of owning it. I’m in the process of getting a 2nd opinion at a different garage

I hate these automatic climate control systems, Over complicated, Sometimes you just want vent air And the automatic system won't let you turn it on Without AC running

Easy to override. Sometimes I like auto, and my wife never uses auto. I also like to just have vent air. Press the button for the dash vents, that turns off auto. AC comes on also, regardless if it's on Auto or not. Just turn it off.

I have the same year car with the same problem. Your would think the brainiac engineers would figure out a fix or admit the reason why the compressor was designed to run that way. GM, please pay me for the three compressors my car will need in it's lifetime because of your idiotic engineering!!

I do. Same thing, 2020 Encore Gx. I won't accept a ridiculous excuse like, "that's the way its made". Likely very true. Some mindless engineer made it that way. It's a software glitch that you cannot get fixed. I'm a loyal gm customer and I refuse to sit still for mindless excuses. Fighting this to the end. This car will go through 3 or 4 ac compressors in its life because of this.

No it won't. I'm not saying you might not replace one, but they last far longer than they did in the '70s and '80s. Back then you'd be happy to have the compressor last more than 50k miles. If you are really a loyal GM customer then you well know that's the way GM has been selling them for many years. Since at least the late '90s. All 7 or 8 of my GMs since early 2000s have been this way. Also, as I said in a previous post, simple to override. I will say that I turned it off on my 2019 GMC Terrain and it has not come back on.

I have a 2005 saab 9-7x with automatic climate. a trailblazer clone… the manual says the compressor runs when temps are above 60 degrees no matter what, even if the climate system is turned off. I havent totally figured it out but i noticed i had the system off and ice cold air was still seeping through the vents. So i figured i might as well just run a/c anyway… i think this 2005 only lets you over ride the compressor if temps are below 60.

Well that's interesting. I had an '03 Trailblazer and it would turn on also but I could turn it off. I didn't know they did something so different with the Saab version.

I read the saab manual closer…. It said the ac pump is always on when in automatic mode and the temp is above 40F… so that suggests that when you go to manual mode you can turn the pump off. But i swear the pump was running when i turned the system off…
