Broken shift knob trigger

Has anyone tried to repair (not replace) the shift knob trigger for an automatic transmission? The repair kit includes the trigger, spring and the part that the trigger pushes. Can it be installed without removing the knob?

OK, I was able to repair the knob with the kit. A bit tricky to position the replacement trigger, but I didn't need to pull the knob off.

I was able to repair the knob with this cheap kit without pulling the knob off. It's a little tricky to seat the chrome trigger.
