Buick Ownership
1992 Buick Century LTD
I have a 1992 Buick Century that I have owned since 2005. The cigarette lighter in the dash compartment has never worked and it has never been a problem until now, so I never messed with it. However, I have since purchased an iPod Touch that I would like to use with an FM transmitter so I can hear the music through my after-market car stereo. The only ones I can use that will work are the ones with the cigarette lighter adapter as they have the best sound and signal. I cannot use an adapter cord that attaches from the stereo to the iPod because my stereo does not have an AUX plug.

I know how to replace the fuse and I have located that in the glove compartment, but I need to know how to replace the cigarette lighter as it has become rusted and corroded. Is it an easy job to fix? What are the steps involved? I have located a replacement cigarette lighter at a local auto parts store. Thanks!

should be rather simple. just do a dash teardown, pull the existing device out through the back, wire in the new one and put it in. then re-assemble the dash. most dash boards can be torn down with either a Phillips screwdriver or a small ratchet. key is to not pull, if it doesn't come out, there is probly another screw, and it will come out in sections.

whoa whoa whoa before tearing the whole dash down, verify that the clip connector on the back of the ashtray is aligned properly and actually on the cigarette lighter socket. if that doesn't work, I would think about running a wire through the firewall to the battery (there is a rubber grommet on the right passenger side under the glove box behind the carpet, thats how I got my amp power in) with an inline fuse adapter of course, and get an "auxillary power port" (a plastic device with two lighter sockets (never use a lighter in it) that would wire to your new power wire. I've tried to get the dash down, it is a royal pain, and in the end it will most likely rattle and never fit as snug again. there are hidden screws and bolts all over it.
