computer reset trick

i think i stumbled across the method used to reset the computer on my 95 buick century. i heard about it working on a 95 jeep so i figured eh, wtf and tried it on my car. well i think it worked. it doesnt bog or act weird anymore. heres what i did:

undo the positive battery cable (easier said than done)
get into the car, and put the key in, crank to start and hold for 30+ seconds
turn the key off and remove. reconnect your battery lead.
start your car. mine started almost immediately and ran like garbage, idling real high for the first few minutes, like it was just running on basics. i drove it around the block a few times, brought it back, and since it has worked fine, it doesnt sputter or bog at the light anymore, and it doesnt seem to shake as much. i think this recalibrates everything if im not mistaken. enjoy!!

wouldn't this be the same as disconnecting your battery for a few minutes? I heard that this also resets the computer...

One thing here guys I would like to mention. The battery cable disconnection should always be the negative not the positive. The reason for this is so while undoing the negative cable it doesn't make a diff if you make contact with any metal parts on the car (negitive grounded vehicles of course) with the tool your using. If you hit ground while undoing the positive cable ... get the picture! Not only do you increase the possibility of injury but you could fry the ECM and there is a chance of exploding the battery. Thought this might be of interest.

I've seen someone arc the battery wrench on an AC tube and melt a hole in it. It didn't take much arcing either. Like Robertwav1 says, disconnect the negative first.

I arc'd my mr2 battery the other day big time. It melted the positive terminal down.

I accidently dropped a steel wrench on the battery and it just happened to lay across both terminals...

boy was that scary... talk about sparks and burning smell!

I think that this is effectively the same as just disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and reconnecting. The only reason I can imagine for turning on the starter for a few seconds would be to make absolutely sure that there was no residual charge in the system. I suppose that touching the positive and negative terminals together, turning on the headlights, or any other use of the non-existent power would serve the same purpose.

Listen to these guys I had a battery blow up on me. Nothing to be playing around with ever. Battery acid in 2 guys eyes, thought I blew my hand off, after rinsing buddies eyes out then mine I was literally picking plastic out of my chin. Sounded like 5 12 gauge shotguns going off at same time scary shit. My hand and chin still bear scars from that idiotic move

When I was young and starting out I arced out on a fender and had a watch on and the watch but tbe wrench and burnt the fu&k out of my wrist. ALWAYS - FIRST.
