Hi guys! I have a 71 Electra that has recently had a rebuild on the 455. It has run great since the rebuild until recently. I started it up, pulled it out of the garage and shut it off. Tried to restart it within a minute of shutting it off and it wouldn't start. It would turn over but not fire. I would get spark only at crank and at shut off. I replaced the cap and coil but it still does the same thing. The new distributor is one without points. I would like to figure out the problem without replacing every part of the ignition system. Has anyone ever have this problem or have any idea on where to go from here?

Are you using an HEI distributor? If so, have you replaced the rotor?

Yes, it is a HEI and I haven't changed the rotor. Does that affect the spark from the coil?

Absolutely, the fire goes from the coil to the rotor button and then to each individual cylinder as it rotates. I had a friend who ran a towing service back in the 70's and he had a box full of HEI rotor buttons in the front seat to replace those that were stalled on the freeway and other places. The rotor would my first suspect, but if that is not the problem, you may have a bad distributor pick up coil, or ICM (Ignition Control Module). Try the rotor first!

I will try replacing the rotor, just wondering why I don't get spark directly off the coil.
