Did they ? I do believe they did, although not sure. Notice the '09 Allure , LaCrosse and Lucerne have the infamous 3.5 GM 60 degree V6, which is renowned for intake gasket problems. I drove a 2009 Impala with the 3.5 V6 and even though it is rated at 11 hp more than my Buick 3.8 liter, I do believe my '07 3.8 Allure would leave the '09 Impala 3.5 gasping for breath in any attempt to match the 3.8 in a contest of speed, which of course should only be on a licensed race track. The 3.5 is cheaper to make, made off shore I understand and certainly not the engine the 3.8 is IMHO. I for one, will not buy any car, Buick included, that has the 60 degree V6. Had three of them and learned my expensive lessons. Intake gaskets, piston knock, unimpressive power.

The 3.6 HFV6 is a gem though. And my Super has a 5.3 V8 with active fuel management and gets good MPG and has 300 hp.

Hi - Yup. The Allure/Lacrosse was the last model to utilize the 231cu./3.8 litre. I agree with your comments about the 3.5 versus the 3.8. I noticed a similar situation when comparing the 3.6 to the 3.8. The difference in performance can be attributed to the amount of torque available at low RPM. Admittedly in my comparison, though, the 3.6 was stronger at high revs.
