Engine starts for 3 seconds, then dies

My grandson's '89 Reatta has been sitting for a few months. When I start it, it starts right up with a high idle, then dies after 2 or 3 seconds.

I've never seen a car do this before and am baffled.

Is there anything specific to the Reatta that could explain it?

Is there a check engine light while it is running?

Try and unplug the MAF sensor and see if it stays running.
