how do we remove the damn tail lights on this thing

Real easy..........lift the carpet back in the trunck, undo the 4 (or 6) wing nuts, unplug the connector..........Done!

Yes; the entire housing of red and white plastic comes off. You unfasten it inside -- either by removing the trunk liner, or if yours has the access panel, popping that loose. Then lift the housing free of the car.
