Cleaned the IACV over the summer as vehicle was stalling at idle. I had found a good video on disassembling the pintle and really giving it a good cleaning. Lately, vehicle has had fast idle, especially last night it was really racing. So much that take your foot off the gas car will lurch forward. Last night I decided to clean the IACV, thinking it's either this, the throttle position sensor, or coolant temperature sensor. I probably should test the TPS and CTS as well and get more practice with my multimeter but I keep hearing that IACV is a likely culprit for these Buicks.
After unplugging it again last night, I was going to clean it but couldn't find the video on how I had disassembled it before. I tried pulling the pintle/shaft outward to clean unsuccessfully. Then I tried unscrewing the pintle but the insulator (base for the rod) broke. I think I must of just pulled it straight out last time but it seemed stuck this time. The guy in the video I couldn't find said that the spring on OEM are best and it's worth trying to keep them by cleaning. I think in my case it was just kaput This morning I picked up a replacement at O'reilley's.
Couple things I noticed while replacing; the o ring they supplied was loose so I reused my old one. After installing, I noticed the Delphi weather pack seal (blue looking silicone seal) didn't really compress enough to allow the connector to clasp. Bad connector design? I will throw some dielectric grease on the connection in the meantime. I then unplugged the battery for a bit allowing the computer to reset and ran it.
There is an improvement and idle is lower but still seems high, 1200-1300 rpm according to my blue driver. Just a google search says idle rpm should be around 600-800ish, can anyone confirm that?
Going to try cleaning the throttle body and probably change out this O'reilleys IACV for a different one. I regularly clean the MASS sensor and throttle body probably was cleaned last year. Not sure if the Delphi or Standard Motor product would be a step up from this one. Does anyone know what a good aftermarket one would be? I looked at Amazon and you can buy one for $9.00!!!
