Wondering if its possible to upgrade the 2016 Encore Intellilink system to use Apple Carplay...

This would be amazing, but I don't think so, since it does not have a touch screen. (at least my new 2015 doesn't... maybe the 2016's do?) I don't think Apple Car Play can be controlled with things like the dial and buttons. Sadly.

Why did GM design the Encore screen so far away from the dash and therefore make it a non-touchscreen? The system in my Cruze is so much easier to use. Also, why do you have to push the ring for enter instead of the middle of the button?

I have two guesses:
1. The smaller the car, the harder it is to make it comfortable. In a big car there's a lot of room to move displays and controls around, in a small car like the Encore everything is a lot closer together and thus compromises have to be made (such as moving the screen away from the center console).
2. Some versions of the car (for example the low trim of Opel Mokka, see picture below) lack the color LCD screen altogether. This necessitates a button stack which takes up the center console area reachable by hand, leaving little room for the screen.

Check Crutchfield.com, enter your car info, and see what receivers they have that will fit with the features you want. If you are lucky, you can install it yourself with plug and play wiring harnesses.

You may be better off looking in the Lacrosse forum as this is for Encore and may not apply. Also try Googling "2015 lacrosse apple carplay upgrade" as not sure by how much is the word cheap, but it has choices.

The problem with that is the environmental controls are integrated into center stack along with the infotainment system. Crutchfield doesn’t recommend any of their systems.

You may have better luck on other GM forums, as far as getting something from aliexpress not sure how much support or warranty services you could expect.

If Crutchfield can't recommend any replacement unit, I'm not sure how aliexpress can. Electronics are Crutchfield's specialty. On aliexpress you can't select anything by compatibility with a given make/model.
