OK, so i have a 96 RMS and a open diff. I want a LSD and rear disc breaks so i"m interested in replacing the axle. How much would this cost, and where would I find one?
 
How close to Albuquerque are you? I saw on their CL a police car disk brake posi 3.08 rear end for $100.
 
If your 96 Roadmaster Sedan doesn't already have a positraction, that means you must have a non-towing package car, with 2.56 gears. Unfortunatly, that requires a series II carrier. Pretty much the only car that used one, was the 94-96 Roadmaster Sedan. All the other gear ratios used from 87 and up, were a series III carrier.

The easiest thing to do, is to swap an entire rear, with better gears and a posi already in it. The disc brakes are simple enough to add to any of the 8.5" sedan axles, if it doesn't already have them.
 
Great, what is a good price to pay, and where do I find one? Ebay seems like it would be expensive because of shipping.
 
Yes, I'm in Albuquerque. I would like to have a posi 3.08 on the wagon. But I don't know what would be involved with putting that part on the wagon.

I really want a LSD but i'm confused about what I need, and google isn't much help with RMS in my experience. I'm at stock horsepower, but i just want something for the street that'll help me get around better inclimate weather. thanks
 
Bare minimum? A series II positraction for a GM 8.5" axle, with 30 spline axle shafts. Carrier install kit. Very competent mechanic who actually knows how to properly setup the gears based on face to flank, and not heel to toe. The carrier will just need to be shimmed side to side for just a carrier swap. You will have to remove the ring gear from the old carrier, and then put it on the new one. Set the backlash, check the drive / coast pattern, put it back together, fill it up, and you are ready to go. Expect to pay around $300 to have it setup by a shop that actually knows what they are doing. Setting the gears up right is tricky. But luckily, the gear set is not changed. When the pinion is swapped out, that is when setting things up gets tricky.
 
You can find used Stock Auburns for less than $100 sometimes... But the HUGE majority of them are series III units that are for the gear ratios 2.73, 2.93, 3.08, 3.23, 3.42, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, etc... The series II for the 2.56 gear ratio, is harder to find. Expect to pay more for it, if you do find one that is still working. The Stock auburn is hit or miss, with how long it will last. Some cars, it seems weak by 85k(Jesus RMS), and others, it is still very strong at 150k(96 Civi Caprice I had). I had one completely toast by 135k in a 95 9C1, and 170k in my 94 9C1. Yet the guy I bought the 94 9C1, said the stock posi in his other car was still very strong, at around 170k on that one.
 
Found this old post looking for info. Thought my 96 RMS had a limited slip 2:56. I don't know anything about diffs, obviously, so how can I find out what's in it? Also, what's the best diff for a daily driver/ weekend warrior. I don't always drive it like I stole it, but when I do, I want to have fun. I'm sick of the one wheel squeel! Thanks, Adam
