......feeling like an idiot. I bought the car used with only only one key and associated FOB. I lost the key in my house. The car is in the garage so the key has to be on the premises somewhere. I've spent hours looking for it. It is now day four of not being able to use the car. Good thing I have another car.
I initially called the dealer and asked if they had a key in stock. They said yes. When I got there (45mins away) they realized they only had the blank without chip....aarggh!
So I bought a key blank with chip and an OEM remote FOB at remotesandkeys.com.
What do I do now?
I imagine I have to go back to the dealer and have the key cut,.
What then?
Keep in mind I can't drive the care to the dealer.

I think I'm out of luck on this. I will probably hade the vehicle towed to the dealer for big$.
I hate security shi#.
If I'm able to drive the car again, I will adopt a new policy - key stays in the car. Won't be locking it. If somebody wants it bad enough they can have it. So much for security features.

If you go to the dealer with proof of ownership they should be able to cut a key off the tumbler codes associated with that VIN. That takes care of the mechanical side. You'll still need a scan tool to program it.

Have you tried an automotive locksmith?
So i was being fatalistic. I hadn’t recieved the key with transponder when i made that last post. I got it today and zoomed off to the dealer and got it cut. I have not received the FOB yet which begs the question- i imagine the FOB needs programming as well?
I understand that the computer in the car will come up with a new id code making the old id inoperative…..hmmmmm…so you really can never make a duplicate?
How will i program the FOB when i receive it?
Should i wait until i get the FOB before reprogramming the key/transponder and it will happen automatically?
I speculate the cat knocked my original key off the kitchen island into the trash which i took to the dump in my other car or……it fell out of my pocket into the toilet while i was “resting” and it’s now my holding tank. I have Checked everything, pockers/shirts/tol boxes, couch.

I didn't wait for the FOB.
I tried the 30min procedure to reprogram my new key with transponder that came with it. It didn't work. My fatalism was called for apparently.
Our local locksmith can't program a transponder. Guess I'll have it towed to a dealer.
Can a full featured OBDii reader program a transponder?

A friend of mine has a very nice scanner. I drove 45mins one way through a snow storm to borrow it. I did a scan and all of sudden it reports low battery voltage, not right off but 5 mins in. Sure enough the dash lights begin to dim. I rush back to the battery under the back seat and damn if it doesn't measure 8v! I unhooked the battery and put it on a charger for a half hour and it recovered. If I hook it back up and it drains again.
Ok GM...you got me....off to the dealership.
Tell you what, lately I'm getting hi teched to death., I'm an EE and it's happening at work too. New engineering software, new operating system. My head is swimming. I feel like building a teepee in the woods and living there for a while.

I ordered my PK3 from Amazon based on the reviews. I followed the instructions that came with it and had no issues programming it. That was my second time trying because the first one that I ordered wasn't stamped PK3 on it and would have had to be programmed by a locksmith or dealer.

Haha DrivenDaily!
Yeh, my key has PK3 written on it.
Looks like the ability to execute the procedure fully is interfered by the battery dying....or....
Here's a weird one - even with the battery fully charged I only measure 8v at that junction box under the hood passengers side where the start relay resides.
Is this normal, or could this be my problem?
Is there a fuse in between the battery and this box?

Phew! Finally got it going. Indeed the 30min procedure wore the battery down to the point the starter wouldn’t engage. I’m just deaf enough and the car is quiet enough i couldn’t hear the solenoid making a feeble attempt. Hypothesis correct. Lights automation drew more than 10amps with key in the on position according to my meter. Recharged overnight and apparently the last run of the procedure took. I’m happy now - moving out of the teepee.

Redundant post - tried to delete.
