mpg inquiry from potential buyer

Hello,

I am considering a Regal because I think it's a fantastic car and fits the "young professional" theme (which i assume Buick was gunning for).

I have read a lot on the forum and my biggest intrigue/worry relates to gas mileage:
The numbers are quite low compared to all the competitors (Hyundai, Honda, Ford....)
Is GM messing with the engine management so they can push the hybrid version? I ask that because the 2.4l engine seems like the same one that sits in the GMC Terrain and that gets 32mpg (with the aerodynamic of a brick) while the regal only 30.

I would love the 2.0t but that mileage is even worse!

I couldn't find one large official thread where everyone puts down their mpg so that it gets properly compared.

Any advice?

Thank you.

I have the turbo and get 27mpg with a combo of highway and city. You have 2 options here. Buy the 2.4 and get better gas mileage, however, you will lose performance. Second option is buy the turbo, get a couple less mpg, but gain a car that's much more fun to drive (in my opinion).

I drove both at test drive time and quickly eliminated the 2.4. Engine was Noisy and it didn't have much pep.

There are 3 reasons why I bought the regal over any other car. First, the styling looks great. Second, it was available in a 6 speed manual, third....it's a turbo! Mpg was at the bottom of my list.

Good luck in your decision.

I get 27-28 with my 2.0t 6a, that is 50/50 mix with driving the speed limit on the xpressway and quite often speeding in the city.

I have gotten 32-33 on a highway trip.

Is saving $30 a month in gas worth it to you?? (just throwing a number out there which may not even be close to what you may save by going hybrid)

The turbo is fun, which could be even more fun with a tune and maybe some other mods once they are released... Something to consider.

+1. BTW...I usually average 25-26 mpgs on a tank with a mix of probably 65/35 (around town/hwy). Yesterday I did a trip of approx 175 miles - 90% highway and got 31.9 mpg with some pretty spirited highway driving. My Civic will get me 36-38 mpg but nowhere near as fun to drive as the Regal. Depends on your preferences versus the other cars you mentioned.

So far I am averaging 23 mpg in approx. 65/35 city/highway driving, but city ride can be a hassle in Toronto with a lot gridlock stoppages. I tried 91/89/87 fuel grades and it seems that premium and 89 bland gave me almost the same fuel economy and performance.

BTW I like to push her over 75 mph quite often.😎:headbang:

I have Turbo, and aprox 5000KM (3100 Miles) on mine, and I get about 28MPG / 8.3L/100KM for about 80% HWY and 20% CITY.

One tank not long ago was mainly city driving and inner city freeways, I got about 24.5MPG / 9.6L/100KM.

I do not baby the car, but I also don't drag race from intersection to intersection.

I have the 2.4 engine in my regal. So far I have around 19,000 miles on it. I'd say I drive 70/30 highway/city. Usually around 75 mph on the highway and 35-45 mph in city. The digital read out in my car says I've averaged 24.7 mpg. Although I can say I have gone over 500 miles on the highway many times on one fill up.

I have 1800 miles on mine and I drive 80/20 (hwy/cty) I put on 120 miles in a day. My lifetime mpg avg is reading 28.2. My last tank was calculated at 28.8.. this is setting cruise to 70-72 for 60% of my trip with the occasional burst up to a 100 to pass :headbang:
I do feel like I have had to baby the car to get 28… this might change the more it breaks in.

...I have the 2.0

Thank you guys.
I am surprised at the good mileage on the turbo, i thought the 2.4 would smoke it.
I wasn't picky about mpg before as long as the drive was good; but times have changed and gas in Canada (Toronto specifically) costs $4.7/gallon today and that's after all the recent "relief at the pump". Combine that with the fact that the turbo similarly equipped is 10K more here it ends up hurting a little.
Keep the good info coming, it's definitely helping with the decision.

Bear in mind that most likely you will end up using 89 or premium with Turbo model but with the fun factor on turbo is really worth it.

Also there are a lot of remaining 2011 models built in Germany and some Oshawa built units sitting on the lots in the area. Some end of model year incentives are way better buy than pricier 2012 models (although there is almost none available now). The interest rates for financing or leases for 36/48 months are quite good so that can be a ticket.

I like the turbo and it gets decent mileage compared to my 2007 Mazdaspeed 3. The Mazda averaged about 25 mpg with mostly highway driving and it was a manual. On long road trips with the Mazda, I could squeeze close to 30 but that was babying the drive. With the Regal, I have yet to hit 1000 miles and the first tank I averaged 28 mpg and the second was 25 mpg. I am thinking that once it breaks in a little more I will be closer to 30 with some fun injected here and there while driving.

Good luck with your decision. What made me choose the Regal was the $365/month lease payment (first month payment down) with all the features the car has.

I have the turbo with a manual tranny. I drive about 70 to 80% highway and I am getting 28 to 29 mpg. I ride with the traffic in the fast lane so it's typically 70+mph. Gas mileage was close enough that I wasn't willing to trade the performance of the turbo Regal for a few mpg. Especially with the amount of highway driving I do a hybrid wouldn't be a big improvement and didn't justify the extra cost.

You need to take into consideration your ratio of highway to city driving. The hybrids are a big improvement in mpg in the city but not on the highway. In some cases they are worse on the highway than an equivalent conventional powertrain.

Reasons I chose the Regal over the competition was primarily the interior. IMO the exterior styling was on par or a little better the competition. But the interior was much better. The materials in the others looked cheaper to me. The materials in the Regal interior looked more expensive and solid/less flimsy. And the overall styling of the interior is better.

Re: mpg inquiry from potential buyer

I have the Turbo, with 6 speed manual. 6K miles in last 5 weeks. Highway at 75mph on the PA Turnpike (lots of mountains up and down) get 33.7 to 34.1 mpg. Highway at 80 mph (tried this to see what the penalty would be) I still got 32.8 to 33.4 mpg. Daily combined back roads and some highway been getting 27.6 to 28.8 mpg. I am amazed that even with aggressive driving on back roads that my economy stays this good.
Love this car, I considered and drove Honda Accord EX 4 cylinder (too much of a dog and interior was not very nice), Subaru Legacy GT (nice car but the interior is not nearly as nice as Buick). The best car I drove under $25K was the Suzuki Kazashi, simply amazing car much better than anything else on the market at the price. I decided on a higher budget number so it was moved out of the mix.

To add to this a little. I just bought mine a little over a month ago. At that time they were willing to deal pretty liberally on the non-turbo models and somewhat liberally on the auto trans turbos. But I had to haggle a lot to get them to come down on the manual trans turbo. Now their stinginess on the manual may be because it was the only one in the area. I checked multiple dealers and only one had a manual. Beyond the tranny and the turbo there didn't seem to be any "sacred cow" options. I was also able to get 0% financing through Ally/GMAC so that was a big plus.

Thank you guys.

The car will be doing mostly 80%city 20% highway because the commute on the 401 hwy is brutal and most of the time you're doing turtle speeds.
Do you still think at this ratio a 2.0t is good?

I will start looking around at dealers for some deals and see what's out there.

If the commute is like that you might wanna look at hybrids. You are probably looking at 20-23mpg in either Regal.

In that case your fuel economy will be in the range of 18 mpg (13L/100 km) regardless of Regal trim and I would suggest some more fuel efficient sedan, maybe Chevy Cruze Eco or similar.🙁

Sometimes I encounter HWY 401 or other 400 Series hassles and unless you want to go with the premium car as a matter of choice I would buy something more frugal at the pump. Or maybe 2012 Regal with eAssist that should get average 32 mpg or (7 L/100km) but then you are pushing the same price as for Regal Turbo 2011.
