2015 Buick Encore
I have a 2015 Buick Encore that has had a catalyst converter replacement by the used dealer which I believe is a generic one by the invoice price receipt. is that OK for my vehicle? or does my vehicle require the name brand catalyst converter and order to run properly? The GM dealership said they will not reset the p420 code if it has a generic converter on the vehicle.😱😭🙁

What state are located? There are different CAT ratings for Cali/NY set by those states and maybe some others?

I'm a bit surprised that one would need to be replaced in such a new vehicle. Factory cats contain far more precious metals than aftermarket ones and do their jobs better which is the filter the exhaust gasses but the car itself isn't likely to run any better as a result of having a factory cat over aftermarket, unless perhaps it's a vehicle where the exhaust system back pressure plays a part in the power output of the motor. Perhaps I am wrong though as newer cars do have another oxygen sensor past the cat and I'm not sure what the computer would tell the system to do if anything was different from what a factory cat might do. It should do the same thing in theory but might not last as long, which in your case seems ridiculously short already unless the first one was stolen or something. Anyhow a Magnaflow cat can be bought for less than $100 and isn't worth near as much to those who collect used ones for their precious metal contents but it will still work better than an old factory cat that's tired or had blown its innards out.

Thanks for your long replyI’m just wondering why am still getting the catalyst converter code I’m sure it just needs to be reset so I’ll talk to the mechanic to see what they think thank you so much though.

Why didnt the used car dealer reset the code when they replaced the converter?

Why didnt the used car dealer reset the code when they installed the converter?
They supposingly did but it came back on. I’ve taken It to a local mechanic in and they reset the code hopefully it won’t come back on but if it does then what?

Thank you for the info very much appreciated.😜

How many miles on the clock & what state are living in? Usually emission related issues have an extended warranty of at least 5-yrs 80K mikes, or more. If I were you, I would do some research on the warranty on the emission systems on this particular vehicle.

Hi,
My vehicle has 130,000 miles on it. I’m calling a GM dealer mechanic to request a diagnostic test hopefully they will do a very through check over on the vehicle. I live in Salem ma.😋

Looking at the code seems more likely the O2 sensor is the suspect which could be the connector, harness or sensor, it may be just a poorly installed converter. Catalytic converters also fail because they become plugged due to oil blow by which has been on some of the GM I4 engines noted on the forum.
