I have a 2000 Buick Park Ave; I want to remove the 2 6x9 rear speakers which are blown.

For the driver side speaker, Do I need to remove the bracket which supports the factory amp below the speaker? If so, any tips on how to remove it? It's very difficult (impossible?) to reach some of the bolts which mount it.

How do I remove the plastic fasteners which mount the speakers from the underside? These plastic fasteners have proven difficult to remove.

Will replacement 6x9s fit the screw pattern of the stock 6x9s?

Mounting depth may be an issue w/replacement 6x9 on right b/c of the factory-supplied amp, so I plan on creating a spacer to drop the amp down about an 1 inch this allowing for a deeper speaker.

Thanks for assistance.

The fasteners are split 2-piece push-in pins. Grab the small center part with pliers and pull it out, then the remaining part will release. Be gentle with them, I've not been able to locate exact replacements.

I think it's possible to remove the left one without dropping the amp but I'm not sure. The amp mounts to a bracket that comes out with just a few bolts. The wiring connector is behind the amp - squeeze the tabs and yank.

Replacements are tricky, since they mount from underneath. Most good 6X9's have a high rolled surround that will hit the grille if mounted from underneath. Look for speakers that have the cone recessed below the mounting surface.

Factory replacements are p/n 15210476, $26 from GMPartsDirect.

Edit; That's for the 6X9 "subs" used in the 9 speaker syatem.

The amp appears to be able to be unscrewed from the bracket without removing the bracket; if you can do that, the speaker may be able to fit through the bracket opening if you work at it. I'm going to look into this soon because my left rear woofer is blown too.

how do you know if you have the 9 or 6 speaker deal?

i just got an 01 Ultra and just curious.

The 9 speaker system has 3.5" speakers in the rear doors, a center speaker in the dash by the windshield, and an amplifier under the rear deck. The 6X9's in the rear deck are bass only (GM calls 'em "subwoofers"... tho they're really midbass drivers). The 6 speaker system has full range 6X9's , no rear door speakers and no amp.

Thanks to everyone's reply. It's easy to drop off the factory amp; I put it aside and it's still wired up in the trunk. I have not g any luck removing the plastic fasteners that secure the speakers to the rear deck. I've been trying to remove the middle part as described by pulling it straight out of the outer sleeve w/o success. As far as whether it's necessary to remove the amp, obviously haven't gotten that far yet.

If there are any other suggestions, please advise.

9 Speaker here, so the part number info is great! i have a Rattler on the rear passenger side.

I Didnt even know they offered the 9 speaker system, have only had the car a few days and knew i liked the sound, but havent taken the time to investigate. Thanks Maylar.

I had the 9 speaker system and I hated it. No bass up front, and the silly center speaker robs the system of stereo separation and any chance of imaging. Front mids mount in a plastic box in the doors filled with fiberfill. I'm a car audio nut and IMO the stock system is awful. With time and money it'll get better though...😀

Re: Removing rear speakers!

Sorry for the delay in reporting my progress. I've removed both factory 6x9s by removing the plastic support anchors by using needle nose pliers (thin nose) to work the middle part out, then pull straight out. It's a struggle, but the plastic support anchors will eventually pull straight out. Finding thin tipped, needle nose pliers (or even electrical snips) to get up underneath the middle post of the plastic anchors is key. The speaker above the amp will come out w/o removing the amp support bracket, but I cheated by removing a couple of the brackets screws and wiggling it downward to pull out the speaker.

Now I neeed suggestions on what to use to anchor the new speakers to the rear deck since screws won't work and I can't find suitable anchors at the auto parts store. PLEASE ADVISE.

Once installed, I'm going to use gator clips to wire up the speakers.

I destroyed the push pin retainers on mine and have not been able to find exact replacements aftermarket. GM still sells them, part number 25641031, at an outrageous $4 each.

In my case I am redoing the system anyway and changed the 6X9 "subs" to full range Boston Acoustics triaxials run off an aftermarket head unit. I fabricated mounting baffles for them using the spacers the speakers came with, with studs hanging down. The baffles are glued to the underside of the deck with construction adhesive.

The mating connectors to the wiring harness are available from Crutchfield and others.
