2005 Rainier CXL with broken drivers side air door actuator.

Searched the internet for "how to" videos and diagrams with little success I say little as there are videos for an Envoy and Trail Blazer however they differ greatly from the Rainier.

My first attempt was from under the dash however there is a U shaped air duct that is woven through the gas/brake pedal that I could not remove. The actuator was visible but unable to reach it with my hands let alone any space for tools.

Second attempt was to remove the cover plate of the air vents and the radio and hvac controls, only to find a thick metal plate that can not be removed blocking the actuator.

Has anyone replaced this actuator or one of the other actuators on the drivers side, if so could you share the secret on how you succeeded?

I do hope this is a project I can do myself rather than taking it to the dealer as I'm certain they would want big$$$
