What do you do to help prevent/stop rust on your car/underbody? Around this time I usually just sand it off and throw some rust converter on it until I can do something a little more permanent in the summer. Pretty useless to do anything more than that in my opinion.. especially with the harsh winters and road salt as well as the age of the vehicle.

If Michigan is anything like Wisconsin, might as well let it rust. Years ago, they only used sand at intersections. We got around fine. All the new technologies are promoting such laziness, people want the roads clear even during a snowstorm. Now WI is using salt brine, and it is killing the nice evergreen trees along the roads. Rust is a fact of life, can not be prevented unless you thoroughly wash the whole car after every use. Technology is running rampant, and destroying our way of life. Rusty cars, live with it.

I'm sure they treat the roads the same here as in Wisconsin.. salt salt everywhere.. I know it can't be prevented, though I wish it were the opposite 😎 Only hoping to slow it down to extend the life of the vehicle by a year or two

Clean and pressure wash the whole under-body when the weather permits, and give a good coating of POR-15 to all surfaces. Example shown below. BTW, this is a 1985 Caprice which I restored 3-yrs ago.

Depending on where it is and how bad it is I use spray black rustproofing, rustoleum rusty metal primer, rust arrester, navel jelly, and/or PB Blaster corrosion stop. http://www.blastercorp.com/Corrosion-Stop

If it's flaking rust off and missing metal it's a big job.

If you're really into the last generation or two of the LeSabre or other GM H-bodies, and you can be flexible, this place is great. They sell used ARIZONA H-Bodies in Michigan. That's where I got my mint 04 Custom back in 2011. That 03 Bonneville in their inventory looks sweet.

I got my 05 last year and it had pretty much no rust anywhere on the underside . Last fall I had it undercoated with Fluid Film . Spent about a hundred bucks total . I've seen some really good pics from people that have used this stuff , and I'll see what the underside looks like myself in a couple months .

How has it lasted throughout the years?
Since it is a "Garage Queen" it looks the same today as 3-yrs ago in the southern states. This car was never driven in the snow belt.
