I have a 2002 Buick Lesabre I bought used last summer. Runs great no complaints. About a week ago the security light came on, and it chimed. This happened a few times that day, and never happened again until yesterday. Then the light came on, there was the chime, and the light would stay on for about 5 mins, then go off. About 10 min later this did all over again, and kept doing the rest of my drive. I do not have a readable chip in the key, the car starts and runs fine.

The handbook says to open the door, lock with the power lock, the security light should come on. It does not. Last night when used car, security light came on when started, and stayed on, but this time no chime sound.

Right now this is just an annoyance, but is it to lead to a problem? In some research states could lead to car not starting.

Thanks for your input !

Sounds familiar. I can't recall which vehicle it was but eventually I had to have the car flat decked to the dealership. It wasn't the ignition switch that needed replacement but some other part associated with the security system.

My 2000's security light has come on/off periodically ever since I bought it. It lights up solid about every other startup, and stays on for the trip. There is a chime warning when I put the car in gear, but no other impact whatsoever on the vehicle functioning. I've tried the "ignition key on for 30 minutes" a few times, which is supposed to reset the security system... has not worked for me though.

Update on this situation. I guess after all I did have a chip in the key. Not a raised surface on the key itself, but inside the top housing. I gave the other key I have with the car a try, and the situation went away. Thanks to all who gave suggestions !

Yes, the chip is embedded in the key (called Passkey 3) for 2000+ models. That didn't solve my particular problem though... i have the Security light with both sets.
