Stuck in park

2007 Buick Lucerne CXS...So I take my mother in law to physical therapy on Wednesday I pull up and park in the fire lane to assist her. As I try to leave the car starts right up as usual, but the shifter is stuck in park while the cluster reads that it's in neutral. Tow truck driver manually puts the car into other gears but it still wouldn't move. Buick has had the car since Wednesday afternoon and still hasn't figured out the problem. It's under warranty but they won't approve a rental car until they know what's wrong with it (as long as it's something that's covered in the warranty) I work 7days a week and I've been riding public transportation since Thursday..please help! Any ideas/answers are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

There is a little sensor that tells the PCM that the car is in which gear...the sensor is dead...telling the car it is in Park. I believe the sensor is in the steering column.

Thank you for your reply, turns out it was the neutral safety switch (which is covered under the warranty) and the shifter (which is not covered under the warranty). So I should be able to pick my car up by the end of today after paying $844! Yay...goodbye school supplies...lol

Probably the same thing that happened to my wife's Lucerne. The dealer explained it to her as I did in my reply, but ours was probably the neutral safety switch also. Price seems to be about the same. Ours was almost a grand with towing. Sorry about your kids school supplies. We have been eating cat food since I paid the dealer. (at least we can afford the expensive stuff) LOL
