1995 Park Avenue with 285K. Runs great but just recently it seems as if the trans. is slipping in 1st gear - the rpms have to go up considerable to get up to any speed. However, if the gear shift is put into 1st gear, the car accelerates like it should with minimal rpms.

Is this a trans. problem or a sensor type problem. Have not serviced the trans. lately.

Thanks for any feedback.

Does this happen all the time, or just when cold?

All the time. BTW, drove the car about 60 miles round trip two days ago with quite a bit of stops and starts, ran fine, just had to start off in lo gear.

Have you tried to start off with the selector in 2nd gear?
Does as would be expected starting off in both 2 and 3. Requires more gas but not as if slipping as it feels when starting off in D, but not in 1.

It sounds like an internal seal leak causing low line pressure. When you shift to 1st gear that increases the line pressure to the 1st gear clutch pack. You could also have a broken Forward Apply Band. Sorry, but both are internal problems that will require a rebuild.

Thanks for the reply. I seriously doubt I want to have a rebuild on this car. Is the leak a fatal problem with the trans or can I drive it starting in 1 without fear of trans failure, or even in drive with the higher rpms?

Not knowing whether you have low line pressure, or a broken foward band, you may be driving it during a limited time with those problems. Internal problems only get worse with age & miles. I wish you the best!!
