My car has had no problems since today. I was at a stop and it quickly overheated. I checked the fan and its fine. The Coolant fluid level was fine as well. As i inspected the parts more, i opened the lid to the coolant and it had a sort of rust-colored mud. I thought maybe the coolant burnt when it overheated and that was the result but i wasn't sure. Is it my radiator? maybe my fluid was old? Can anyone please help me before i have to spend $982376428387423 on maybe something i could do myself?

You must check the actual level in the radiator, not the overflow tank. Remove the radiator cap with the engine cold.

The thermostat could be bad which should be an easy job or you might have a collapsed hose, also pretty simple. It could also be a bad radiator cap. A bad waterpumo is also posible but not likely. Sometimes the impellor seprates from the pulley shaft. The radiator could also be clogged and gummy coolant will clog it.

If the coolant has turned it needs replaced anyhow so now is the time to do the thermostat, replace the cap and while the system is open flush it. Check the hoses while you're in there.

Make sure to use the correct coolant when you refill it - the wrong stuff will create problems.
