hi Im new here. been searching around for the issue im having and havent found anything too specific. Anyways I started having my brake light and the dinging come on when the winter cold weather came. It would come on only below 32 degrees, and anything above the brake light wouldnt come on. Well it started coming on more when it was cold and eventually just always goes on. The dinging is the most annoying part. Now it is warm weather and is still on all the time. My car only has 70k miles. I just had a lot of work done. Had all the intake gaskets replaced. lower and upper and the upper plastic redesigned manifold. Also had that new design pcv stove top as well, and the water pump and spark plugs replaced. switched over to synthetic. The car runs like new and this brake light is really getting on my nerves. When I searched i saw people saying there are switches on the brake pedal assembly that will disconnect the dash light. I tried looking around the assembly. I found some sensors and tried disconnecting them with no success. Anyways Im just looking for some help. thank you.

Have you check the level in the brake fluid reservoir? There is a low level sensor in the reservoir, which may be causing the problem.

Yeah I did. That was the first thing I checked, i forgot to mention that. I also tried seeing if there was a fuse for the chiming. I took out some but only got things like the abs light on. Maybe there is a fuse just for the chiming noise? what do you think?

You may also want to check to make sure that the parking brake pedal is releasing fully, as this will keep the brake light on as well. Try lifting up on the pedal and see if the light goes out. The cable may have stretched a little and may need to be adjusted.

Ya I tried that too I believe. there was even this rubber part that stopped the pedal, and I took the rubber part out so the pedal went up more. no success. Is it possible it could be just a faulty sensor or dash light? the brake pads are good except the rotors are not flat. It vibrates a lot when slowing down at highway speeds. maybe there is something faulty with the brakes. Im kinda just at a loss, and have been hearing the dinging noise for about 4 months now everyday.

+2. The brake levers may be binding under the dash, or the cables are rusted & binding in the rear drums, preventing full release.

Under the dash I looked and it releases fine. Maybe its in the rear like you just mentioned, and maybe that could have something to do with the bad vibrating when stopping. I think I should get my brakes done, and see if that changes it.

In the mean time this quote from my online manual might help to remove the chime module:

The convenience center is located on the underside of the instrument panel near the fuse panel. It provides a central location for various relays, hazard flasher units and warning buzzers/chimes. All units are replaced with plug-in modules.

Hope this helps.

Since it only happens below 32 degrees, it sounds like the brake fluid is full of moisture. Has it ever been changed or bled?

it started out that way, only going on below 32 degrees. no I have never had the fluid changed. the brakes dont seem spongy, but the fluid does look pretty brown. I think I will try disconnecting the chiming as the above poster suggested first, but do you think the issue is related to the brake fluid? I want the car to be safe, I dont mind putting money into it since it only has 70k milles. thanks for the help ill report back.

ok fixed it, well i think. I unplugged the two sensors on the e brake pedal assembly under the dash, and the light went off on the dash. and no more chime.
Did you try to readjust them? Obviously, something is wrong with the switches, or the lever.

yes. I readjusted the switch. I didnt plug it in as far, and everything works fine now. thank you.

THANK YOU!

Mine started doing it a few weeks back (a '94). Finally found this post, and got it disconnected. 🙂 Only SAW...one sensor on mine, but if there are two, then it was the right one.
