Pleasantly Surprised.

Because I drive to NM and sometimes to AZ, and have been in "Dust Storms", I like to carry an extra Air Filter just for those times.
Checked the ease of replacement.

First, when I unscrewed the six screws, I found that screws stay attached to the top cover. I.E. impossible to lose the screws. Great idea.

Second, when I removed the filter, the filter has an additional Fiberglas filter glued to the top of the regular looking filter. GREAT IDEA.

I'm going to make sure the part number printed in the Owners Manual is correct (as I've found much wrong info in Owners Manual) then I'll buy one to carry with me.

Will also buy a Cabin Filter.

Did you replace it or leave it in there? Most modern air filters are a one time seal and shouldn’t really be ‘checked’ visually as the seal is now compromised. Folks have been known to install an external air filter service minder to keep things in check.

Put it back in there. (Car is too new to replace filter). Made sure it has a good seal. Can't put it in wrong because of the unusual shape

Size of windshield wipers is wrong.

It’s kind of absurd how much is wrong in the manual. I’m a Technical Writer by trade and I’d be fired if I published content with so many issues.

To be more precise, owners manual says :

Drivers Blade is 22inch (55cm)
Actual Blade is 24 inch (61cm)

Passenger Blade is 18inch (45cm)
Actual Blade is 20inch (51cm)

Rear Blade is listed correct at
10inch (25cm)

Who knows how many other errors in the Owners Manual.

The Regal air filter doesn't have a one time seal. It's a standard foam seal that's been in use for many many years, so removing the air filter to check it and then reinstalling it won't effect the seal.

Even the foam seal can become deformed from all the heat cycles under the hood. I’ve seen many airboxes with fine particles beyond the filter on cars where the filter was checked.

If I lived in a very dusty region I’d install a filter minder device so I could visually check before breaking the seal.

Personal preference more than science I guess? I’ve just always had a laugh at quick lube places that visually inspect your air filter to show it’s dirty and needs replacement. A visual check does not show pressure differentials.

You are right that a visual filter check doesn't indicate it's airflow ability. But when the filter doesn't look dirty vs it being black from dirt accumulation, it's a good indication on whether the filter should be replaced or not. Holding the filter up to a bright light is better than just looking at the filter to get an idea how dirty it really is.

I recently replaced the air filter in my Regal after 4 years, and I was surprised how clean it still looked. But I replaced it anyway since I already had a new one; plus air filters are cheap compared to the cost of a motor replacement.
