2014 Encore
I would like to remove the thin chrome trim piece that frames the center dash controls on my 2014 Encore. The chrome overlaying the plastic has blistered and is flaking off. If I can pop off that trim I could sand off the remaining chrome overlay and either paint it flat black or try to do a wrap. I am scared of popping it off and breaking it. As I test prayed it up, it looked like lighting wires are connected to it. Any advice would be most helpful. Please see photos:

GM#95107197, that little trim piece is $180, I understand that you'd rather paint it. There is chrome paint but you have to prep very good before you spray this paint.

Thank you so much for replaying. Can I safely remove just the chrome trim and not the entire cover as shown in the above diagram?

I've never had mine apart. Once you remove the whole trim you should be able to see if it is glued, screwed in or simply snaps together. Electrical connector is a simple push tab to remove and wire is long enough that you don't have to worry about breaking it. I believe it is on the left side. Just be careful. Panel is only held in place by 5 spring clips like these.

Hey Buzz did you ever take this apart? Got any advice on how to do it safely? I have the exact same problem and I was hoping to do a 3m vinyl chrome wrap.

I am fearful of breaking it. Was going to see about a tool to safely pop the U housing out if the dash.

You need to get a trim tool, soft nylon type works the best, the red ones at Harbor Freight are a little rough IMO. Start at the top on the one side popping it loose and slide it down popping the other holders loose, time is your friend so going slow and don't force it. As far as the repair the chrome on the plastic will probably need to be removed as any type of covering paint or vinyl will show the cracks so consider on how and what will be used for the finished product.

Great! Thanks

I’m having the same issue, I can’t decide on whether to paint it or vinyl wrap it. Has anyone tried either? I’m just not willing to part with $180 for a new trim piece.

I was going to try it. Has anyone seen any videos of the removal process? I'm scared of breaking a clip.

I signed up for this thread. Just purchased a 2013 Encore and this is the only real problem I am having.

BTW: Every encore I have looked at over the past 8 months has had this problem.

180$ for this part wow that is crazy

Was this ever fixed and how hard to remove the trim piece in the pictures above?

Also my encore has the same issue around the shifter trim piece.

I was using my fingernails to remove the chrome stuff on it and it looks like I don't really have to take it off to get the chrome paint off of it I can probably try some kind of sos pad or something and it will just end up black. But I would like to remove the trim piece, and paint it nice.

Any info on how to do it?

I haven't refinished the part yet. I think a chrome vinyl wrap would look best. Even spray painting it in a flat black would look better. I have 125,000 miles on the car and now the GPS acts "drunk". As I drive down the street with the moving map on it starts to spin and wander off the street. If the 50 cent trim piece is $180 I can imagine what the GPS repair would be? Looking at buying a Tesla Model Y. Drove a demonstration one in Naples. . . very impressive.

Different vehicle but same concept remove part, sand, cleaned and paint using SEM Trim Black Ultra Satin.

Thanks it was a time when GM added bright work things to make it look more expensive, like pulling items off the shelves at Walmart and sticking them on LOL.

Mine is flaking off too! 2015 Buick Encore

Does the shifter trim piece just pop out?

It's a Lucerne so I wouldn't know if the Encore would be the same, but the woodgrain center console pops out and the plastic chrome is removed from behind 4 screws hold it in.
