power steering whine

i have have issues with my car whining(specifically when i turn the wheel) so i automatically jumped to the conclusion that it is my power steering. i flushed out the old fluid and put new in it but the noise got noticeably louder and the wheel shakes more during constant turns. when i flushed the system I saw that the high pressure line has lots of gunk on it which leads me to believe that it is leaking. would a leaking high pressure line cause this whining noise? or is it most likely the pump itself?

I topped the reservoir off with new fluid and then took off the low pressure line and connected it to another hose that i used to drain the fluid into a drain pan. once it was all connected and the other end of the hose was in the drain pan i got in the car and turned the wheel lock to lock. i continued doing this and filling up with new fluid until it came out looking much more clear.

Considering it's 1996 according to your profile, with unknown mileage and if the pump has ever been replaced it may be the first suspect.

On the fluid change you may want to try and do additional lock to lock as it's possible that air may have still gotten in, which would be a jerking effect while turning.

Hose, connector and seals are all possible suspect parts especially on how the fluid looked that was removed and how long its been in and age of the vehicle.

The serpentine belt and tensioner pulley may also be something to inspect. If the belt is slipping it will affect anything attached to it.

The car has 80k on it and the pump does not look like it has ever been replaced.

I popped the hood and was listening to the whine earlier today and it did sound like it was coming from behind the alternator where the pump is at. It also gets much louder when i turn the wheel. should i still inspect the tensioner pulley and serpentine belt?

I'm also wondering if the sound could just be present due to the high pressure line having a leak at the seal

Are you listening and watching in the engine bay while someone else is turning the wheel?

At 25 years and 80k both are factors on the pump, if the high pressure line is leaking it can add to it. If the belt is in poor condition, cracks, oil, etc or when turning the wheel visually check and see if it's slipping it would also should be considered.

No i have not. what am I looking for to see if it's slipping? see if the belt is straight or not ? The belt also look fairly new I believe it was swapped out recently before i bought the car. Although if you listen hard enough you can hear a speak through the whine noise so maybe the belt is misaligned.

This is one of those problems that needs to be looked at, really can't tell much from the drivers seat.
