Might the GS be the perfect car?

I’m sure that most all of you are aware of the soaring values of used cars. I recently had an offer to buy my GS for considerably more than I paid for it 15 months ago. This made me think that I should test drive some new cars to see what, if anything, might appeal to me.
I drove an A4, A5 Sportback, CT4 and CT4V and a Buick Envision. I like the A5 Sportback but it is very hard to get in and out of. The Envision was primarily to see if the easier access might be combined with something nice to drive. It isn’t.
After these test drives, it became clear to me that I am driving the perfect car. It is not too big or too small, has loads of easy to access space in the trunk, the most comfortable seats I’ve ever owned, and is absolutely gorgeous to look at.
What really matters, however, is that it is a hoot to drive. Great power, superb brakes, tight steering in GS mode and overall nice handling.
And so, despite the very generous price that I could get for my car, I’m going to keep it and hope that someone comes out with something interesting in the near future.

Price points are all different but you might have considered a CT5 in that mix. A little bigger than the CT4.

It's a great car, but I feel like they left a little on the table in terms of what they could have done in terms of 0-60.

I’m curious how good your offer was. In 2005 I bought a brand new 2004 CTS with a $33k MSRP for $23k. They had a $5k factory rebate, the dealership added a $1500 discount, and I had $3500 in GM card rebates. In 2013 I did it again, this time on a Chevy Volt with a $42k MSRP, $3914 state EV rebate, $7500 fed tax credit, $3600 GM card rebate, dealer state tax sale, and other discounts plus $1500 for my trade in, all in all $22k with taxes out the door (I had to pay more then wait for the state and fed credits/rebates). I doubt I will ever find a better deal the rest of my life.

I’m certain I paid far more than than in my used 2019 TourX. $31k Essence out the door (taxes included). Buyin a car during a pandemic with a silicon supply shortage probably wasn’t a good idea, but I figured I wasn’t going to let ~$5k get in the way of getting this car.

Decemebr of 18 got my TourX new for $29K with rebates down from $40K sticker & I thought 25% off was pretty damn good. (still do)

I think for its class and MSRP, the only competitor really is the Stinger GT. I didn't particularly like Stinger's seats, but I feel slightly regret not buying a Stinger.
Outside of the class you should be able to get equally or better cars for a similar price. I personally would go for a Golf R.
If you consider the discounts that are common for this car today, then I doubt anything could compete from a value standpoint.

In general I just don’t like Korean cars. Despite all the fancy features they add, and the 10 year 100k warranty, their quality issues in the 80s still sticks in my mind. I know there quality is much better nowadays, but I’m still not buying a Singer.

I have the same feelings about appliances and electronics. So many people are enamored with Samsung and LG products. But if you were around in the 80s, you would never buy anything made by Goldstar because it was cheap crap. Lucky Goldstar renamed themselves to LG and made their stuff look pretty… lots of Americans are getting fooled.

The Commodore RSV isn't quite the same spec as the GS ( Commodore VXR) but close enough. It's pretty well the best car on the market as far as I'm concerned. It might not be perfect but it's a very good all round vehicle. A sweet V6 with a silky smooth gearbox, good performance, excellent fuel economy, excellent handling, good driver aids.

and if by gearbox you’re talking about a manual tranny, you’ve got me drooling. Why, oh why doesn’t someone offer us something like this in the states. We used to be able to depend on BMW to offer a number of manuals. now it appears it;s Kia and Hyundai, a couple Cadillacs, and a bunch of econoboxes.

What did you think in detail of the Envision? I’m not sure I could get past the made in China thing but for the equipment you can get on it even loaded it seems like a decent value.

we test drove a slightly older Envision and between the TourX and the Envision, the space in the Envision was much narrower. Also when you lean the passenger seat all the way back, there is a weird bump caused by the alignment of the bottom and back that just wasn't going to work for my wife. So now, with any test drive, we try leaning the seat all the way back to see what it feels like. The TourX easily beat out the Envision and Cadillac XT5 in terms of seating comfort.
