2020 Regal TourX
My TourX is the first car I’ve had that does not count down miles until empty all the way to zero. Once it hits 30 I just get the <30 miles until empty and it doesn’t change after that. In my other cars once they hit zero miles I knew I still had about a gallon of gas left. This gave me a little more confidence while finding a place to fill up.

Does anyone know how many miles you actually have when the TourX says <30? Does that mean you are on your last gallon or does it mean that you have the 30 miles until the reserve gallon that my old cars had?

Man, I got burned bad on the <30 miles thing. Would you believe that the person who helped me was an official with the Boy Scouts!?!

I wish they would have, like all other manufacturers, offered lower increments.

Lesson learned!

I rarely let mine get below 1/4 tank. Lots of articles out there that it's not good for the field pump to go below 1/4 tank.

I guess he earned his merit badge that day.

Do you know how far you got after the <30 notification before you ran out? I used the trip meter and went 26 miles before I lost my nerve and took a gas exit.

It was always my understanding that if you always run the tank down then you won’t have to worry about debris building up.

My last car was a Ford Focus hatch. I Put 180,000 miles on it and only filled up above 30 miles until empty a handful of times. I usually filled up around 0 miles until empty.

I couldn't say, unfortunately.

The articles all say the reason is because the fuel pump is more likely to overheat.

Here's a representative article: Why You Should Always Keep a 1/4 Tank of Gas in Your Car | YourMechanic Advice

I’m going to give the engineers more credit than that.

Well, I’ll give the engineers at GM more credit than that. I don’t think they designed a pump that destroys itself if used over .75 of it’s intended workload.

I would also not run my cell phone battery down to zero before charging the sucker.
Of course, you can use your stuffs however you want. 🙂

I remember that Seinfeld episode....

We drive Chevy Vans @ work & they do the same thing.

That's what i do - when it gets down to 30 m->e, i set the trip odometer & count back up to 30.

Serious question...why the desire to cut it so close with running out of gas?

Must be a software setting. The ZB Commodore will show right down to zero. I've been down to about 5 km (3 miles) once before chickening out.

I just want to know how far I actually have to better make my decisions on when and where to stop.

For example, the other day I was driving two hours home with my 8 month old. Near the end of the trip she woke up and was not very happy about still being in the car. Because of this I wanted to get home as soon as possible. I was 28 miles from home when I got the <30 signal so I decided to get off the highway and fill up. This added about ten minutes to my trip. If it had been possible to make it home without stopping I would have much preferred that. I know I should have just filled up before the journey but I thought I had plenty of gas for the trip.

Easy solution is to fill up when you get down to 1/4 tank.
But what's the fun in that ?
Life is just a gamble, let the wheel of fortune spin.

I’d rather not gamble with the life of my fuel pump or the possibility of being stranded.😉👌😎

Mine goes to simply low fuel, but that normally flips over around 30 miles left. It can vary a bit depending on city vs. highway driving, though. I think the most fuel I've ever added is around 15.5 gallons. I think tank capacity is 16.5, so roughly a gallon left at the theoretical 0 is my best guess.
