The codes have two components. The first indicates the register on display. The second displays the value(s) of that register. GM has not been entirely forthcoming about what each possible register actually represents. People like MrBuick have collected information relating to other models, speculating that at least some of them will apply to these cars. Some speculation has been disproved (eg: neither 08 or 24 relate to engine coolant temperature). They may mean something, they may just be static.
Codes are one kind of value that can be stored in the registers. So, if you are looking at register "01" (CCM system) and see a value of 43, the system can't read the PASS key resistor. A "1" preceding the code does indeed indicate a "history" code -- that is, something that was detected at one time, but has cleared itself. So a "143" means the system HAD a problem with the PASS key, but that has been corrected. Of course, if you are looking at register "00" (PCM codes), then the value 43 has nothing to do with the PASS key system, it relates to the knock sensor.
Live data, reflecting current operating parameters, is viewable through certain other registers. For example, if you look at register 06, you will see the current value of the engine RPM.
And finally, variable values may be set in a register. For example, the value in register 15 can be manually changed. The HVAC system will adjust it's response to other sensor inputs based on the value you set in register 15.
